83 VF750F Noob: A clutch (and owner) in pieces

    Greetings, all

    I'd post a picture of my 'ceptor were it not in a shameful state of undress.

    Stats:
    1983 VF750F, 12k miles, Blue/White. Great shape!

    Short story:
    My nephew bought the bike from a CL posting. This was to be his 'first bike' since he's a seasoned *scooter* rider...
    After 4 days he called me to see if I was interested in taking it off his hands. Too much, too soon. Natch, I fell smitten with her at first sight.
    While she was in his stead he managed to turn the clutch into mush. I purchased the friction plates, soaked them for cupla days in oil and disassembled the clutch.

    I've got it all back in but for a few, er, washers and such.

    Can someone help me on the order of the final assembly? I've ordered a manual but it's still not arrived and I am going nutz over this.

    Since the new friction plates are 'fatter' then the old ones, does this mean I need to adjust the clutch? The spline seems like its not protruding as much now.

    Any help would be appreciated, greatly.

    Friction plates are first and last into the basket, according to the bike bandit diagram (every single diagram is completely cut off on the bottom, though :smash: ). I count 7 friction plates, and 6 steels.

    IIRC, this bike has a hydraulic clutch, then no adjustment should be necessary. However, this is an excellent opportunity to flush the system and install fresh brake fluid.

    Yeah, I'll post pics. I pretty sure I've got the plates on in order, it's just the last bit that's got me confuzzled. Laid out everything in order and somewhere along the way I screwed it up.
    Now I've got washers, the 'cone' spring, the roller bearing that goes on the tip of the shift actuator, a 27mm nut and I don't know what order they go in. Arrgh...

    It's my understanding that this model 'lost' the sixth gear found in its cousin the Magma, so I've got five gears to account for.
    I printed the bike bandit diagram but the damned thing is so exploded and it doesn't show order of dis/assembly. The tears are mixing with the oil and I need to back away...

    If he fried the clutch then DO NOT put it back together without new steel plates. If they're warp .012" or more the clutch will slip. You won't be able to see the warpage with the naked eye. Use a piece of flat 1/4" glass, marble or a machined surface and feeler gauges checking around in about 6-7 spots. Check yours out first would be a good thing to do.
