What year was the last year for a PRE V-Tec engine.

I had a brand new 08 and damn near had to give it away with a whopping 43 miles on the clock.

For me the V-Tec isn't what I want, so what is the last year to not have a V-Tec?

The sixth gen VFR800 was the first to introdce the Vtec heads in 2002. As long as you buy a VFR that is 2001 or earlier you will avoid the VTEC system.

I'm guessing the VTEC started in 2002.

    Honda VFR800 RC46 (1998-2001) and VTEC (2002-on) model information.

Here's a site that might offer more info: Honda VFR800 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However, the VTEC has changed over recent years - with the largest changes in 2007 I think. Prior to 2007, I think the VTEC was a lot more vicious. I would think the 2008 would be a wonderful bike to own. I have the 2007 and love it. Good luck on finding that 'right' bike.

Yes, 2001 was the last year for the 5th Gen. And yes, VTEC changes were made on the 2006 model. I own a 2007 and it is very smooth. No abruptness anywhere that would not be expected when holding it wide open compared to a 5th Gen - which I also owned previously.

Thanks for the replies. My goal now is a pre 2001 VFR. I don't care for the VTEC period. This old man needs more sport in his sport bike. Bad enough I have gained 50 pounds since 1987, my 2008 VFR had gained 100 pounds in the same amount of time.

I didn't have a problem with my vetch (2007) but the PCV made a noticeable improvement in drivability and smoothness of the vetc kick in. Well worth $300 IMO.

Just out of curiosity, did you give the VTEC enough time to really draw that conclusion? 43 miles is hardly enough time to evaluate anyting on the bike. As others have stated, the VTEC transition, especially with a PC, makes it as if it's not even there. Either way, the 5th Gen is a great bike. Good luck with your search.

I LOVE the 98 - 01 5th gen. That series still has the gear driven cams AND is fuel injected.

In my book, you just can't beat that.

When I bought the '09, one of the things that sold me on it, was the V-Tech. When it first kicked in on the freeway on ramp, it scared the begezus out of me but then I started having fun with it on the freeway heading back to the dealer. I think it was barely a 15 minute test ride. But to each his own I guess. The PCV does tame the kick quite nicely though.

I picked up the 5 Gen recently because I wanted another VFR that I could have fun on and not over use my '09 (is there such a thing), plus I really wanted one with the gear driven cams and FI. So I'm with DaHose on that one. I haven't had much play time on the saddle yet as I am giving the bike a little refresh and some things are taking a while to come in and being busy and all. Actually now that I think about it, I have the last model of their respective generations, at least here in the states. The '09 is the last year they sold the V-Tech and the '01 is the last of the 5 Gen. Maybe I'll do comparison review, the last of the "generations", but I imagine that's been done already.

Anyway, while you're looking at 5 Gens, if I'm not mistaken the '98 is the one with the Catless exhaust.

    On 5th gens ---
'98 - '99 = catless and larger dia headers, manual fast idle. (MK I)
'00 - '01 = cat exhaust, auto fast idle via wax unit. (MK II)

As a 5th gen nut, IMHO, the MK I is the most desireable.
