I have been in the market for another bike after I sold mine about a year ago and recently came across this 87 VFR700. The guy that posted it put a new gas tank on, installed new turn signals, cleaned the carbs, and got it painted. Its got 31k on the clock. he says it runs great and is in great shape mechanically. I plan on catching a ride up to Phoenix here soon to pick it up and ride it the 2ish hours back here to Yuma. I have not riding on the street in about a year since I sold my old CM450c. I used to tool around on the local highways and stuff back home but never got it on the interstate mostly because it was such a small bike and didnt want to try my luck. Do you guys have any suggestions for the ride back? Since its been so long the thought of riding on the street again is more daunting than I know it really will be but I am still just a bit nervous. Also, are there things I should look for when I go to check the bike out before committing? Anythings these bike may be notorious for? From my research I foud the general consensus is that the 2nd gen VFR's are pretty solid. Any help is appreciated. Note: the gas tank was still being painted when this pic was taken and the front fender hadnt been sprayed yet.
Regulator/rectifiers were also a problem on 2nd gens. I dont think they wereas bad as the 5th but something to keep an eye on. As for riding it home. It will only go as fast as you want it to. I wouldnt worry about it. If you could ride that 450 you can ride anything. Congrats
I would say imho to not get one older than 1990 - you know why? A simple thing really for me - Tire Size. The size of tires on 1990 and newer is dramatic and I just feel the wider the tire the better. If I remember correctly the front tire on my 1990 was the same size as the back tire on a 1987. I just feel the larger the tire the bigger the contact patch and the safer I feel on the road. Small thing -sure - but I do think about it. Especially back then when I was buying my 1990.
