    Hi all,

I m having a few problems with the fuel pump on my 2001 VFR800fi, sometimes when I come to start it the pump does'nt cut in, the FI light will stay on and it will turn over but not start. If I shake the bike about it will eventually come on and then all is fine until the next time I try to start the bike. Some days its fine then other days it will play up every time I try to start the engine. I have checked the relays, fuses and connector on underside of the tank. I m guessing its a bad or loose connection somewhere as moving the bike about usually sorts it, anybody any ideas what it could be ?????

    Many Thnaks in advance.

Did you check the main relay and fuse located near the battery, common source of failure and frustration with the 5th and 6th gen's

I know it's quite some time since the thread was originally posted, but I finally found the problem with the intermittent fuel pump. After testing all the relays, checking power supplies, earths, even suspecting a faulty ecu I discovered by chance when I turned the handle bars to the left the fuel pump primed, the fi light went out and the bike started !! After closer inspection I realised the hiss immobiliser light was staying on when the fuel pump was not priming, so after all this time chasing fuel pump problems it was the immobiliser not disarming which in turn would not let the fuel pump run. So what I found when the handle bars were turned to the left is the immobiliser receiver harness would stretch slightly and everything would burst into life. So suspecting the harness connector I took the front fairings and instrument panel out, the connector was in perfect condition. After jiggling the harness around a little the immobiliser stopped working completely !! So removed it from the bike and did a continuity check on all 4 wires between the connector and the wire where they disappear into the moulded unit. One wire had no continuity ! I stripped back the insulation and could not find anything wrong with the strands of copper, the wires where like brand new ?? Anyway I soldered in a new piece of wire and job done, starts everytime now. Hope this might help someone else out.

Hey, glad to hear you got your problem sorted out! Thanks for reporting back what you found. HISS isn't common in America so not too many people here are familiar with it.
