    Hey yall,

Im brand new to the forum and VFR motorcycles. I bought my first bike a few weeks ago and have to rebuild it. Progress has been great until now.

Im having serious issues with getting the carburetor back on my 86 VFR 700F, been grunting and cussing all morning. Getting it off and rebuilding was not a problem at all but when trying to put it back on I will push it into place on the back two spots but then the front two attachments are off by like 1.5 inches. What the heck is going on and how do I re-install this little b*stard?!?!

    Thanks,

    -Adeodatus

Make sure the boots are installed correctly as the have a top and bottom and the notch is at 12 o'clock and then install the front as far as they will go in and then tilt the rear boots to mate equally with the carb and head. It is super easy after you do it a couple of hundred times. Here is a pic that may help.

The V4 carbs are a pain to get back on. What I usually do is straddle the bike, get the carbs for the back 2 cylinders seated, then I work in the fronts by using WD40 and some downward pressure. Be careful not to crack the air cleaner base (when applying pressure). Like Toe said, after you do this a couple hundred times, it's not so bad.

Thanks for the info guys! Finally got it back on. WD40, a flat head screwdriver, and some light tapping with a rubber hammer did the trick.

don't use any "light tapping"...... the carbs will break... this i know... had to replace mine from the previous owner and he "lightly tapped" to reseat the carbs.... did you install new insulators? if you reused the old ones this makes it harder because they are no longer rubbery... purchase new ones and the carbs will drop right on.. with a little pushing and lube......

    welcome to the world

Yeah I reused the old insulators. They were really hard.

Anybody know where I could get new insulators/boots?

I don't know where your trying to source them from. We just had this discussion the other day on the Sabmag list, a lot of the guys thought they were made of 'unobtanium'.

If your looking at a parts diagram they are not on the carbs pages, try the cylinder head page. I think they are listed as insulators.

Toe Cutter. I am in need of a rocker for 85 vf700f. I know this part fit a lot of 700's in the first gen. Do you know which models are interchangeable? Oiling problem recognized. I figured you are pretty knowledgeable in this area due to the # of posts/replies you make here. If it weren't for guys like you, guys like me would pull our hair out....if I had any.

ok guys all is good on the carburetor but now I got a bigger problem. Everything is installed, I try to start the bike and it turns over but wont start. After a few seconds of holding down the start button it dies down and grinds (electrical sounding grind). Any ideas?

Did you hook up the neutral switch and other wires on the left side by breather box? If you don't hook em up, it wont start. Is run switch on?

Never messed with them when I got the bike.

The run switch is on, gas tank is on, bike is on.

Oh and what does it mean if all the buttons flash and the front light flashes when pushing the right turn blinker button?

Sounds like your battery is running out of juice. Put it on a charger over night. The fuel pump only fires once for each revolution of the engine, so if you didn't pre-fill the carbs, you are going to have to crank it over for a while to get fuel into the bowls.

Ok thanks bro, I fixed that problem and got the bike to start now. Using the choke helped a bit ;)

Now for some reason it feels a bit off. Rough rapid acceleration on the rpms and it won't idle without the choke fully engaged. Messing with the idle screw doesn't help much.

Sounds like your low speed jets or fuel mixture screw passages may still have some obstructions. I had to clean mine several times before I got it to idle right and run well at low RPMs.

This is strange. I just did a full carb rebuild and all of the jets were clean and clear as day. Now whats the deal with the fuel mixture screw? I poked around with a guitar string to check for obstructions on all the holes and everything seemed clear. Can you point me to a diagram for the fuel mixture screw. Im a total noob to VFRs and carbs.

Thanks a bunch to everyone putting advice in here! Yall have helped me a freaking ton!
