Soooo I lost my key. Yes, I know it's stupid. I put it back in the same place every time but it is inexplicably gone. I called a local honda powersports dealer and the parts guy said there should be a number on the cylinder they can use to make a key. I took the fuse cover off and looked around but didn't see a number (he said two letters and a number I think). Am I not looking hard enough?

The number is probably on the side or back of the lock cylinder. You might try getting your seat lock out if that's easier, it will have the same number on it.
The number is never on the front as anybody could see it and possibly get a key made and steal it.

If your ignition barrel looks like this one being sold on eBay.com, then the number should be easy to see as it looks like there is a number stamped onto the chrome surround where the key slots in.

Thanks. I removed the ignition cylinder entirely and found it. The imprint is *tiny* and very light. Not only that... the last digit was stamped twice. >.< Both 4 and 5. Guess I'm getting two keys.

I talked with the powersports parts guy again and told him the code. Then he told me it's not a code.
This is where I found the code on my cylinder. Is this not it? I looked all over the cylinder and couldn't find anything else.

The number is is always A,B,C or D and then two numbers. The letters designate if it is a a left or right sided key and the the number are the code for the cut of the key, compare it to the helmet lock and if it is the same then have a B75 cut.

Where should it be? I don't think my bike ever had one since I've owned it.

This won't help you if you lost your keys. (Sorry!).

Here is the secret to the Honda key numbering system. At least for the modern two sided keys. If you don't know your key number you can figure it out by looking at your key. These keys have eight spaces or numbers. Start at the tip. Don't count the initial taper. #1 = no cut, #2 = slight cut, #3 = deep cut. So looking at your key with the tip pointing to the left the first cut, if it is slight is a 2, if the next cut is deep it is a 3 and if the position has no cut it is a 1. All Keys only use the numbers 1,2, and 3.

Sooo... if your key is #22311321 it will be starting from the tip just past the taper...Slight, Slight, Deep,No cut, No cut, deep, Slight, No Cut.

If you don't know your key number figure this out and write it down.

Oh and don't ask the parts guy at your local shop he probably doesn't know this either.

I was talking to a friend on the 12th and he suggested a place called "Honda Town." I took the cylinder to them and they cut me a couple keys. Apparently the code for VF500 ignition cylinders is the third letter and the two numbers.
