Just got a new bike, well new for me and i have noticed when I'm in stop and go traffic here in las vegas, the temp goes up to 217 219 then when i get going back down to 190 or sometimes lower when cruising further. Anyway how i guess it would help to know what temp overheating point would be at as well? If anyone can drop some knowledge on this newbie I would be very thankful. like i said this is my first vfr any advice is great advice...... thanks ....

I don't know the 99, but here are the facts on my 6th. Gen 07.
Thermostat starts to open 176 deg. F. Fully opened at about 195. Cooling fan kicks in at 221. Cools down to 210 and fan shuts off.
Yours seems to be working just fine. 190 degree normal opporating temp. Can be higher or lower depending on ambient temp.
6th. Gen has warning at 256 deg. F. Honda says turn it off at this temp. I have never seen the warning.

I run Amsoil 10/40 oil. Amsoil coolant. Amsoil coolant boost. I never see past 225 degrees.
I deal with Chicago traffic on 90 degree summer days.

My 98 runs at about 170 during normal riding, in almost any ambient temp outside when riding slow or in stop and go, the gauge always starts to climb up to the fan start which is 215, the fan cools down to about 190. I run Rotella T6 syn. New T-stat and coolant.
Oh yea, you should post pics or some won't believe you got a Viffer. :vtr2:

The temps you describe seem completely normal.
Vfers run hot, the radiators on the side and electric fan running the wrong way to airflow when moving slow doesn't help.
But it doesn't seem to hurt them in any way. It is the way they are designed.

Normal...mine does the same thing. I run 170-185 in normal cruise depending on how hot it is and it will get to 221 (fan kick on) quick in stop and go. On my 5th gen if you are not going at least 40ish in hot weather she will climb up. The fan will kick on at 221ish and it will go off at around 210 as mentioned above. Get used to the fact that these bikes run hot  I did replace my coolant with Engine Ice and it helped some.

Normal... If you want, you can through some water wetter in there, about 10 capfulls. And don't believe all the hype out there. There is no miracle coolant. Some will help a bit but it's negligable. Since you are in vegas you can run a higher water to antifreeze mixture than 50/50 but stick around 60 water / 40 antifreeze and use the water wetter. The bikes run hot and the fan is temp activated and it should be kickng on around 215 degrees. If the temp is dropping with the fan on and temps are around 170/180 while riding yer good.
