Hi, I have a VFR 1993. I have had some problems the last couples of years. It started a few years ago, the bike did not start and I had to charge the battery now and then. Then it got worse, I had to charge the battery after every trip. Now it is even worse and the bike stops during the rides. The problem is not consistent since it does not happened every time, sometimes it works perfectly. Does anyone recognize the problem? Please use an easy language since my technical English is not the best.

    Welcome to the site!

You should install a NEW BATTERY and NEW HONDA VOLTAGE REGULATOR . That should take cared of your problems

    Like Slovar said: Welcome!

And a new battary and new voltage regulator/rectifier.

That is most likely the issue.

There is a member who goes by Vman on the site. He had some charging issues recently and hopefully he will give you some advice on this issue. He seems knowledgable and explains things well.

(No...I do not work for Vman or any of his affiliates LOL!)

Welcome to the group. I ran into a similar problem. First, the connector in the wiring harness, on the right side behind the mid panel where 3 yellow wires from the regulator/rectifier (r/r) conntec to the stator wiring, burned. I spliced it back together and the bike ran fine for about 4 more months. In Dec, the wiring burned again (actually caught fire). After splicing it together again, I was reading some weired numbers as far as voltage goes, kind of like the voltage reversed itself. Charged my battery. Battery lasted for about 4 hours before leaving me stranded. I rchecked the voltage, still got the odd readings. So before I pulled it out for the start of another season, I started checking things. I also replaced the stator itself. I also bypassed the harness, running 3 yellow wires to the strator harness, 1 wire to ground, 1 wire to the battery. After this, my charging volts started reading as they should, 13.5 at idle, 14.5 from off idle on up. Rode the bike for a week, then started to see my charging voltage drop on my Kuryakyn meter. Pulled the panel and once again, the wiring had started to melt. I immediately ordered a new RIcks Motorsports r/r. After relocating and replacing the r/r, My voltage showed the proper readings as before. So far, my charging issue has not returned. From what you describe, I would get a new battery and a new (at least an OEM) r/r. You also might want to check the stator. To do this, start the bike with the stator unplugged from the r/r. This is voltage A/C not D/C so set your digital volt meter accordingly. The voltage from the stator should steadily increase. The max I think is about 70 volts. If the voltage drops off at any point, then the stator should be replaced as well. Ricks Motorsports Electrics sells both the r/r and the stator for a reasonable price, but being as yo uare not in the U.S., you might be better off getting the OEM units from a local dealer as I don't know if Ricks ships internationally. If you need some more info, just give a yell. Good luck. :thumb:

Thank you very much for all your answers! I forgot to mention that I already tried to change the battery without any improvement. Now I will try a new r/r!

After a lot of work I finally got my dear bike to start yesterday and I got my first ride in over a year (I have been pregnant). It was fantastic, as always! Spring has finally come to Sweden and there are bikes everywhere!

Congrats on having a "Little One"

I have a 10 month old son, so I know how riding time can be limited.

    VFR 1993. Same problem here.

I have a VFR 1993 as well. I am experiencing the same problem. I am trying to fix it. I changed the R/R (regulator) but the problem came back in a hurry. I am now thinking of getting an better after market Regulator...Have you solved your problem? I'll keep you posted... My problem seems to appear when the VFR gets warm...

    Thanks!

I installed a new battery and a new OEM Regulator last year. Everything was fine, I did about 4000KM but it was all country roads...This season first city ride in traffic, the bike got warm as it normally does during city traffic riding and my problem came back. I will install my after market R/R today and another new baterry and let you know. Thanks! (Sorry, I am not quick on the keyboard)
