Is all the hype true?

So I just picked up a 1998 and I have to say it is the sweetest looking bike I have owned. Being its winter here in Detroit, is all the hype true about this bike? I have owned a 2000 ZX6R and 2002 GSXR1000. I am super geeked about finally having a bike with some power, but way more comfortable. I have not read a bad review yet, so I just wanted to hear from fellow owners their personal opinion of this machine?

Congrats on your 1st VFR. I love your wheels and the high mount pipe. I owned several sport bikes before I bought my Viffer. Your Vfr is an amazing ride power and sounds great. I had a 99 900rr, 2001 919, car 600 F2 94. I love my Vfr looking for a high mount pipe. And mirriors without the boots. Keep me posted about those wheels love em

 

Thanks, the previous owner had the wheels powder coated and the Staintune pipe installed. Funny thing about the pipe is that it was installed without the proper exhaust hanger and it kicks the pipe out and up. Personally I think it looks a little better, lol.

 

The hype is true if you're looking for a bike that does everything well, but nothing great. What I mean by that is that the VFR is not a great sport bike and it is not a great tourer. Many people buy one thinking that it is. Motor-wise, it is almost equivalent to a 600cc sport bike and it is a good starting point for 2-up riding. The VFR is a compromise for both of those things, but yet satisfies the real world needs of the "Average Joe". That is why for me, the hype is true and it is the perfect bike. I have in the past owned a number of sport bikes, but they were awful for comfort and 2-up riding. In addition, the VFR has enough motor for what my needs are. I think that this is why it has such a great following. Lastly, you can't beat the reliability or durability of these bikes. So, if this is what your expectations are for the bike, then I think you will be pleased. Congratulations and welcome to the forum.

 

That's exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something still sporty, but comfortable enough to take the wife out without moving to a cruiser.

Just watch out for RR stator and wiring harness. Ride safe and enjoy your new to you vfr

Yeah, it was a sweet bike. It just felt fast and fell in the corners with ease.

 

That is excellent that you know what you've got with the VFR. You won't be disappointed then. Enjoy the bike.

 

One could expect the same sort of responses even on a harleydood forum. It is a little known fact that if anyone disses a VFR on this website they are excommunicated, drawn and quartered, tarred and feathered and forced to ride Harleys into eternity.

 

I find that my VFR is a lot like my old R90/6 BMW. It wasn't as fast as the UJM of the day. It wasn't technically sophisticated and it didn't handle as well of other bikes but there was just something about it. It did everything well, especially if you wanted to ride cross country. I feel that way about my VFR. It's the best bike I have ever owned and I've had a few.

I have had this latest 98 vfr for about six years and really love it. But the one thing i wish it had was more torque. More hp would be nice as well but i rarely go up into the higher rpms. that will more than likely be the main difference you will notice over the gsxr. But the comfort factorwill be so much better you may not even care. I think if i ever get the guts to sell my 98 i will look into either a superhawk or even go all out with an rc 51before i get to old to put up with the riding position. Either way it has to be honda for me on the street.

 

Just like the 600 & 1000 I plan on riding high up in the rpms, so we will see how much of power shock it is for me. My 1000 could be pushed to 80 plus mph before I had to kick it up into second, lol.

Hey, I saw that bike list on Craigslist I think. Did the original ad have a woman and baby posing with it? I was trying to encourage a friend to make the drive up there for that bike!

 

Yeah, this is that bike. The guy who sold it to me was a hell of a guy you wouldn't believe all the extras he gave me with it. Well and you saw the price, I just couldn't pass it up.

 

Taylor - with that being said, have you considered lowering your gearing? I went +2 on the rear and it does liven it up.
