Okay so I wasnt sure where to post this but here goes. While on my way to work yesterday afternoon everything seemed somewhat normal. Caught a bit of rain on the way but all things considered bike seemed healthy. 2 blocks from work I stop and grab rockstar before I start my day. I noticed an odd tap in my left pedal on the way in but while splitting a lane thought it might have been a reflector in the road because it only happened once. As I pull into driveway at work I get to top of the entrance when I notice it seems like im not In gear. Hmm odd.
I look down and pop it from neutral to first and relase the clutch lever.. Nothing. By now im watching the clock so as not to be late... So I push her..with a tad bit of help from a friend to my front row parking :)
Into work and a bit of reading to do ahead. Everything im reading though regarding clutch not disengaging tells me it would be soft lever. Thought maybe fluid? Or slave not doing its job. Stuck maybe? While trying to avoid thoughts if something much more horrid.... it's lunch time.
Out come's the tool kit. Popped the top of resivor and that checks out ok. My next thought was maybe air in the line? Hmm. Well I want to know more symptoms so I start her up. Leave stand down and put it in gear.. Of course it shuts off. Ok so its going into gear but no movement. Up comes the stand and same attempt this time it gies into gear but I notice a small jump in mph needle. Through the gears I go and as gears go up.. Speedo says im moving! Huh? Down in gear and my speed goes down.. All while in a parking spot. Ok so now my clutch is out of the question. Trans and motor are spinning but nothing to tires. Maybe my sprocket is busted?
As it sprinkles down on my puzzled brain I go to follow the chain to see if I can see the front sproket. .. So follow the chain.. simple task. But for some reason my chain is not that visable. Hmm. Odd. I know it should travel right here.. Slowly looking back I notice my rear sprocket seems to be a bit naked. And yes.. If you have not come to the conclusion by now.. My chain has vanished! I managed to make it 25 miles in the rain on the frreeway in Los Angeles only to have my chain vanish as I pull into the driveway at work! I can only tell you the vast thoughts of what could have been catistrophic and fatal senerios that played out in my head as I finished my shift were extreamly vivid.
I am so thankful this played out the way it did and I can ride another day. end of the night im laughing about it and accept that this indeed was " The best bad luck" I could have ever stumbled upon. Hope I didn't bore you to much.. but I felt I had to share. Thanks for reading.

Glad everything was OK. Did the chain fell anywhere near work location?

Would have been interesting to see where and why that chain failed. You can learn from these failures and prevent what could next time be a serious event. Was there any chance of back tracking and finding that chain? If it failed at the connecting links prematurely, you need to discuss this with the person who did the install. If it turns out to be a maintenance issue, well slap yourself and a lesson learned I guess. We learn well from the school of hard knocks. Someone here way over torqued an oil drain plug a few years back. Stupid bastard, stripped the oil pan. But he learned.

The missing chain couldn't be too far back down the road. So do you think it failed due to lubrication or being too tight?? or ??

I wish I could say I found it. I was working so back tracking didnt take place till 7 hours later. And it was already gone by then. What I can specualte is that the chain was only 1 month old. I had earlier post of odd spot in the chain in which tension seemed good and the rest had slack. I was slapped on the hand for not doing sprockets when I did chain. Maybe this was the cause? Maybe it wasnt put on properly.. Maybe a link snapped.. I can maybe all day I supose. What I do know is sprokets and chain will be ready tomorrow around noon and she will be back on the road thursday night.. That is counting on it was one of these maybe's and new sprokets and chain is all thats needed. When I get it apart and back together I will definitly keep you all up to date though.

Just out of curiosity was this a rivet type master link on the chain or the clip type?

If the sprockets were worn, the new chain will not last.. So that might be your issue.

I was riding my old Honda home from work one day when I had the chain jump and catch between the swing arm and the sprocket. My rear wheel locked up in traffic and I fought to get to the shoulder and keep it upright. I made it about 10 feet from the side and bailed before almost getting hit. When someone stopped and put their flashers on I dragged it off the street. Ever since then I'm anal about chain maintenance. It's such a small thing, but like a lot of other small things on your bike it could be the end of you.

Really glad you made out ok!
