Some of you already know my recent story, where I was all set to buy a beautiful 99 VFR and the guy backed out. Well, that same guy was nice enough to turn me onto a 98 model that his friend has, that is just as nice, with less miles, and a lot less money.
So I was just wondering if any differences even worth mentioning exist between a 98 and a 99?
This bike has heli-bars on, which I don't want, and a D&D slip on, which I also don't want. So where can I get the stock clip ons and a stock muffler cheap? Rather not pay dealer pricing.....

Would you be interested in doing a swap. I have a stock muffler that I would be happy to donate to your cause. I may be interested in taking the heli bars as well if you're interested and I could send you my stock clip-ons in return. PM me if you're interested.

As for the differences between the two bikes, I don't think there is any real difference between the two years.

I don't think there's a lot of difference between the '98 and '99, but I'll let more experienced people weigh in on that.

I do have a '98 with stock clip-ons on top of GenMar risers and I have been keeping an eye out for helibars. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in working something out. The only issue is that I'm in MA and I'd have to shovel 2+ feet of snow just to get to the shed where my bike is, so if you're in a hurry it might not work out.

I'm not aware of any difference at all between the two years. Paint code - possibly, but I don't think so....

    Hurry before it gets away!

Once I finally have the bike I will decide what I'm doing about mufflers and clip ons. Bill was the first to express interest, and his offer sounds good to me, so he will be the first one I contact when the time comes.

And I have my 2011 Ninja 1000 (NOT ZX10) for sale. I don't suppose an ad for that is permitted on here in the classified section?
I know...I should read the rules of that forum..... sorry...

The changes happen in the 2000 model. The 98-99 are identical. If you look around you can find the stock muffler pretty cheap. I paid 15 dollars for one off of this site. Good luck and like was said you better hurry these years don't last long.

I don't think there are much rules on this forum (As long as it clean...), you can place the add on Classifies section or create a thread on Anythings goes.

Damn, my bike has about the same mileage and it's an '09! Hopefully these were "easy" miles and that she was well taken care of. Looks pretty clean in the pics. Good Luck.

This guy has had this bike for a year. And in that time, are you ready for this? He put 39 miles on it. He bought it for his girlfriend, and shortly thereafter they broke up. He doesn't like the bike because he is very tall and it's too cramped for him. He has a BMW that suits his stature better.
So it's pretty much done nothing but set for a year, so I will drain the tank and flush and possibly even replace the fuel line(s), tune it up, see how many critters have built a home in the airbox (I am sure none) and definitely put new rubber on it because the tires are age depleted.
I will give this bike whatever it needs. I feel that this generation of VFR is a great bike, and if I didn't believe that I wouldn't be buying one. So that being said, I won't spare any expense to make it the nicest bike it can be. My bikes get ridden quite a bit, numerous out of state trips and weekend 1000 mile jaunts, so it's got to be done up right. But according to this guy, it's got nothing wrong other than the battery is shot.
And what is the regulator/rectifier status on these things? They junk like on EVERY CBR I have ever had?? Probably lots of threads about that I should check out

So even though it is FI, it still has a choke? I sat on a 98 model yesterday, and noticed it asthe annual choke lever also.

    Hey 2007

That is a nice looking bike and you can't go wrong with mileage that low.

The R/R is certainly not the strongest part on the VFR. A good idea is to check the charging system when you go look at it. If you have a multi-meter check the voltage at the battery when you go look at. There should be about 13 V at idle and around 14.3 V at 5000 RPM (low beams on). If the battery is low that will alter the results and the test is best done with a freshly charged battery but if the mumbers are too low then maybe you can use that to bargain on price. New OEM R/R is around $300 (at least that is what Honda wants for it in Canada, and I know for a fact it is less than that in the US) so you could maybe get an equivelant discount if it won't start.

Before I purchased my 2000 it sat on the showroom floor at a Volvo dealer for nearly a year and a half. When I purchased the bike the GM let me know that it had been taken out a couple times and started and let run and then it was rolled back in the showroom. First thing I did was drain the tank the best I could with a hose and gas can (siphon method) and filled her up with fresh gas and some fuel system cleaner, changed the oil and then went for a decent ride. Bike ran fine and I have never had an issue with the fuel system.

    Good Luck
