Seem to have a bit of trouble getting from 1st to second on my 5th gen vfr, it does go into second but sometimes feels and sounds like its being forced! It's due an oil change about now could this be part of the problem?

I've definitely noticed on my 5th Gen that when i get near the end of my oil life expectancy, my shifts seems to get "clunkier".

What RPM's are you making the shift at?

I have the same thing happening on the 6th gen with less than 2000 miles. The oil was changed recently and the dealership told me that is normal.!!

I'm commuting in heavy traffic so change up at low revs 4k or so, when I get chance to change at 6k or higher, seems loads better. Plus the bike may not always be up to full temp at the start of my journeys.

Based on what you describe I would be concered that you have a bent shift fork and/or damaged shift dogs. This is very common on abused or misused motorcycles regardless of make/model/year. I'd start with changing the oil to 10w40 Honda GN4 and see what happens. If it doesn't go away you might need to start thinking about digging into it.

I quick shift from first to second on what ever I ride, (put pressure on shift lever, clutch and reduce gas a cunts hair) usually its as slick as shit and quiet. Sometimes you hear a loader "clack" but thats normal. Traffic and surroundings can fuck you up too, I dont shift into sixth gear regardless of what I am on unless I am doing express way speeds 90-100 mph...

Oil definately makes a difference. I have fresh clutches on both bikes I ride, and you definatley can feel the difference. Vfr, the difference was at 120mph or so, seems to have a little more left..

I'll change the oil and filter and see how that goes. I wouldn't say it's abused or neglected, it's serviced and repaired as required it has 20k on the clock which isn't that much. Just thought I'd add that a couple of times I've hit neutral on the change up to 2nd and impatiently forced the lever up with a bit of a grind! Could this have contributed to the problem? Also is it a big job to inspect/replace the selector? Thanks

I still think what you are describing is normal. Like I said, I took in my bike to the dealer with 1800 miles for the same reason and the mechanic said that it was completely normal and most bikes do that. He told me that unless you shift from 1st to 2nd immediately(under low rpm/low speeds), you can not avoid that.
Give her a oil change and see if it makes any difference.. Good luck !!

we have all hit a false neutral on occasions, you might have a crappy pair of riding boots on, or heavens forbid tennis sneakers

You could even bump the bike out of the next gear on the race track by not being deliberate on your gear changes. Has happened to me on a few occasions, (not the Viffer though) that would be too tough mentally taking her on the race-track

Oil changed, what a difference I had used fully synthetic before and after a bit of research put good quality semi-synth in. Less engine vibration gears change wonderful now! I didn't realise how much it affected everything!!

Exactly what brand of oil did you switch to? Mine is shifting a little hard from 1st to 2nd. I did a clutch fluid change but not much difference. I did find if I am really quick in the shift it goes right in. Still, I want to do an oil change because it's a new (used) bike and I don't want to go to long before an oil change.
