End cap mod for gutted exhaust

I thought mine did. I mean, the exhaust was gutted when I bought the bike, and it was almost like the end caps were just sitting there for nothing. I've been thinking a few days on this one... LOL
I pulled the trigger when I woke up the morning, and did this:

Mark your cutting lines...


I created a simple bracket, if you will, out of a 1x4, to hold the piece in place as I cut.


Here it is, cut out. I then took an angle grinder and smoothed down the sharp edges. Then I hit it with some sandpaper to smooth it even more.


Had some mesh laying around, that was just wide enough, so I cut it and duct taped it in, to make sure it fit properly.


Here is the loose fitment.. not too bad.


And here is both sides.



I think I will end up painting them, as they will start to look like crap with the exhaust hitting them. Probably the mesh at least, before I totally finish them.

I like it. It's something a little different. I do like mine the way they are - but I still think your interpretation is pretty cool. What's under the covers? Did the PO just replace the covers (which are really for cosmetics only) over completely open cans? - As Zombie said, how does it sound? I really like the way mine sounds - the way mine were gutted ended up sounding the way I wanted them to, but there are variations out there which would significantly change the way the system sounds.

 

I'm going to have to research this a bit. I have too many other things to spend my money on at the moment before doing an exhaust upgrade to the bike. This mod is certainly in the budget this year.
After last year on my GS850 with the four into one and a small hollow can the Honda is actually too quiet. I'm not a fan of loud but the stock exhaust it just not aggressive enough.

The previous owner did what I would call a partial gut, which is just fine with me. He cut the ends off the cans, and pulled the tubes that would normally go out the back. He left the perforated liner, as well as the plate that is farthest back and the tube that runs from it. I haven't seen a gutting job quite like this one, but I really like the sound. I think him leaving the last plate and tube intact helped it not be too loud.

 

Basically, if you look at this picture (which is not my exhaust, BTW), the PO cut just outside the welds of the end, which left the perforated liner unharmed, and removed all the tubes except the one that runs all the way to the back. He also left the plate farthest to the right.

 

Thanks for the pic. Maybe I can pick up a used set of stock mufflers cheap and do it them and save the original ones.
When you cut the outside weld do the internals come out easily or is there some dremmel work do do?

 

From what I have read, if you cut the weld the entire internals come out. I think that could cause a tinny noise though, as you basically just have an open metal box.

I did the gut as 91talon described to a set of cans I got from another member here. Here is the link to my previous post with the mod process. Is there any improvement other than sound with the gutted exhaust? I had checked with the local shop and they want about 170 to do it.

 

it might give you a few HP more, but you would need proper fuel management to really take advantage of it.

 

And here is the finished product...

Painted the mesh...


And held it in place with some high temp quick steel. It's not pretty, but it will work.


Everything bolted up and installed.

Looks good. Should keep all the little critters out of your exhaust along with small birds.
