Success! Got my battery in yesterday and installed tonight. Made a few rounds through the parking lot to get a feel for starting and full stops. Then went down the street and back a few times, including a 90degree turn onto a side street and slowly accelerating through a sweeping right. Those 2 were my first experience with countersteering through a turn and it felt very easy and natural.

Bike needs gas and has no tag, so I think I'm done for tonight. Besides... it's 34F outside and the streets are damp. I'd like to end the night on a high-note!

Chain tightened, fender-ectomy and removed the windshield to be dark smoked and cleared.

I think I'll be putting a Shinko Advance or Podium on the front this week...

    WARNING:

Make your license plate mount from SS. I used aluminum the first time and it almost fell off from fatigue. If you cut out the bottom of the brake light and repalce that with clear, it becomes a plate light for nighttime running.

Need a chain guard, too. Lots of huggers incorproate them.

I painted the inside of my rear fender white. CLeans it up some.

Good to know about the materials to use. I'm strongly thinking about using the stock mount, and recessing it under the rear a bit further. That way I have light, and it's not hangin' off the back so far. I'll probably make the actual intermediate bracket from plastic. Torn up bumpers are all over the place when you are in a body shop. :) Great sources of all types of plastic curves and corners.

I still have the chain guard, just left it off today because I have some serious degreasing to do. But that can wait until it's not 32F and raining outside. (ie, no water hose inside the shop...)

I'm not sure about the white-under idea. Most likely, I will just use some spray and shine under there to clean it up and make it more black.

For plate lights, I've seen Light bolts at cyclegear and such. Seem pretty cheap. They are just bolts for your plate that have lights in them. If my memory is correct I think they go for less than $10.

Also, I would stay away from Shinkos (personal experience). They take forever to warm up!!! I crashed my SuperHawk on them basically because they remained hard as rock in 40 degree temps. I've been running Conti-Motions lately. They are cheap and are pretty grippy in the cold and wet. Now, when it gets hot they tend to get a little mushy so I have been running PP's in the summer. Again, your money, not mine just giving up my 2 cents.

Thanks MH. And yeah, it's a Grand National. I didn't pay much attention to it while I was up at the shop today. I was on a one-track mission with the bike.

Smack, which Shinko's did you have? I've been looking at the Raven (hardest), Advance, Podium and even the Conti-motions. They are all about the same $$. I like the Contimotion's tread pattern best (I know that's a stupid reason to pick a tire), but the Shinko's have some better reviews on the 'net.

FWIW, my local (<10 minutes away) CycleGear has the Conti-motion for the front in stock for $79.99, plus tax and $20 to M&B. I'll be taking my front wheel up there tomorrow.

I had an Advance on the rear and a podium up front. I really like the Conti motions, again though, you'll have to see how you like it when you get it.
    Different strokes for different folks.

Just remember, new rubber is very slick for the first 50 - 100 miles so take it easy.

My last post was supposed to say that my local CG has a Contimotion for the front for $79 plus $20 mount and balance. I'm going to pull my front and drop it off this week.

I'll be taking it easy for a while away, while I get a feel for riding in general. :)

So it turns out... that getting the title straightened out is going to be a bit more of a pain than expected. But I believe it will all work out fine, just going to take some legwork and time.

I guess now is the time to take it all back apart, fix the fairings, and repaint. Sorry SmackD, I won't be going back to the clean pearl white. Rather a bit of a mix between a throwback to the older racers, and the new red-white-blue CBR schemes.

I understand, nothing wrong with RWB done right though. Take your time if your painting yourself and have never done it. I did it for the first time on my '93 and even with one color, it sucked and worse, I suck at doing it!! Definitely worth paying someone to paint and fix plastic. At least it is to me.

Don't worry to much about the title, there is always a way. With my '93 I had to get an indemnity bond. Pretty simple, get the bond and associated paperwork for the DMV. DMV runs title checks and then sends you the new one. Even in something shows up on there checks it's still doable. My '93 had a lein on it from 7 years ago!!!!! The financial institution released the lein and the DMV sent me the new "salvaged rebuilt" title. I'm legal now and it's all mine!!!!!

Very cool that your title worked out. I think mine is going to come to getting a notarized letter from prev owner about why they don't have it registered (prev prev owner was single old man with no kids and he died), and then running a local newspaper ad with the VIN. After that, it shouldn't be an issue.

As for painting... our family owns a body shop, and I've done some body work previously through that. My brother Joey (Jtpainter) has been painting full time for the shop for over 10 years, so I'm covered there too. :)

Next time I am up there, I want to mask it off for ideas, but I have to fix lots on the left side before any paint goes on. Getting my inspiration from these bikes...

I like where you are going with this. Haven't seen too many RWB thirdgens so please post pics..Looking forward to seeing how your bike turns out. You thinking about keeping the wheels white? or leaning towards black?

I'm pretty set on the white wheels. :) but we'll have to see how it looks later.

I will certainly post some progress pics along the way, but don't expect them TOO often... not sure how long it is going to take to sort out the fairings.

But we want want pics now man! LOL
Yeah the plastic repair is slow going at times. I agree with you on the white wheels. I think the white really draws attention to the great looking rear wheel and looks period correct. My 91 has gold wheels and I'm thinking about coating them white if I can swing it budget wise.

Here are some lovely pics of what I did today.
Took all the front fairings off to see what needed repair. Luckily only 2 panels are cracked and even more luckily is that the P.O. did the glass work on the inside already! I will sand to bare material at each crack and wipe it with panelbond on the outside to ensure everything is set. After that it's a bit of bondo and sanding.

    Sent from my handheld-sending-thing...

First the pile of good parts. I know the lower front panel is missing a chunk but I'm not looking to rebuild. I will secure things and ride.
