hello everyone just joined vfworld, recently bought a 1985 vf700 interceptor, got it really cheap $400, one of the cylinders does not work and has a loud knock. by just reading at all the threads im convinced it is the rod bearings. im contemplating of taking the motor apart which would take weeks or months to do and it will take serious riding time away from me, the other option is getting another engine and keep the old one so i could tinker with it on my spare time. the question is that there are no vf700f running engines around much but i see a lot of sabres and magna engines, can i use these to replace my current engine? thanks in advance ------gerry
:welcome: to the madness If you can get another engine to swap that would be best. Take time and work on the other and still ride Just my 2 cents
Gerry, I don't think you want an magna motor in your 85. I'm pretty sure they don't have the same performance (cams, carbs, gear ratios) plus I believe that they are shaft driven machines so not a straight forward swap.
thanks for the replies, i just got hold of an engine it was rebuilt 9 years ago and was never installed in a bike, mit has been sitting in the garage since then, the guy guarantees it to be as good as any rebuilt engine, his main concern is that it has been sitting for such a long time and worried about rubber seals etc. it is a great steal for $100 because of the sellers concern. how hard is it to swap the engines, i have done a couple of cars but never on a motorcycle, i understand it is a two man job. will a one man three woman combo work ? haha just a thought.
just got an engine from a guy here in sfo, i started the process of removing the engine, i stopped at the exhaust removel, it seems stuck and i dont want to force it , i might damage something , any suggestions ? will resume again in the morning
Exhaust removal can really be a pain. Look under the engine. I recall that on your model, there might be a bracket holding the exhaust on to the frame. Go slow and take lots of pics. They will be an excellent reference for re-assembly. Jose
thanks for the info the manual never mentioned those two 10mm bolts thats holding the collector, got tired of trying to take off the exhaust cans so i just took the whole exhaust system off in one piece, the one snag i ran into today was taking the carbs of, i loosened all the clamps that goes to the intake, i even wiggled them loose but for some reason the carbs wont even move, it feels like it is bolted into the frame or something. tried to pry it (very carefully) it wont even move, is there a bolt or bolts holding the carbs too that the clymer manual did not mention? again thanks for your input (all you guys), it's great to have support from fellow riders, your knowledge is far more better than the manual.
just got done swapping engines, took me three weekends, it was a solo job and proud of myself since it's supposed to be at least a two man job. so heres the situation, i took the carbs, clutch, starter, starter clutch and all electricals from the old motor and placed it on the new one except for the spark plugs. tried to crank it , would not start, will turn over and wont crank up until i used up the battery. what's going on? also when i was connecting the battery i noticed smoke coming out of the starter button but i thought it was just a case of it being stuck since i had problems with it being stuck before. took out the plugs, there is spark but not the blue visible spark.i will try to replace the plugs this weekend in the meantime do i need to check on something else while im working on it? thanks in advance again fellas
