I have a 1984 Interceptor VFR1000. I burned up the starter solenoid so I installed a new one. Lights come on and the starter solenoid clicks and I hear something spinning. Is that the starter? I just can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Batt voltage would be a great place to start like squirrelman suggested, however you can also look at the exposed start front end. check if it spins, if it does then proceed to ensuring the transmission is in neutral and trying again. if it still fails then you will need to look at starter clutch.

skip everything and use a jumper cable to short batt positive to the only cable lug on the starter motor, make sure the bike is in neutral and depending if you want it to start or not depends on key position(on means engine will run). If it does not crank or starter not spinning change starter motor, if the starter does spin but still not crank then you will need to check/change starter clutch. If every thing works then check all cables from the starter back to battery, check all ground connections and there is a fuse, but you said the relay clicks - double check by holding the relay in your hand and feel for the click. the relay works identically to most domestic cars and trucks, the starter is always connected so no engagement gear.

Heres hoping its simple, because the worst case is opening the case to get at the starter clutch.

Check connections. I had a similar problem a while back. The lights would come on and the battery was fully charged but the starter still clicked.

Sounds like the starter clutch if he has a spinning noise but no action.
