ok, I had to replace the fuel preasure reg. and I pulled everthing off but I didn't notice that the velocity stack are dif. sizes. Do the short ones go toward the front and the longer one on the back. thanks for any help..

No historian 'ere, but i believe the first different-sized velocity stacks were seen on Jim Hall's Chevy engines in his Chaparral SCCA sportsracers in about 1965, followed next by the McLarens.

Please correct me if i'm wrong......

Raven, it usually helps to mark things before they come apart.

ok, (air funnels) per parts list naming are dif. sizes. do the smaller ones go up front and the taller ones in the rear?

I think you could resolve this by checking parts fisches for your bike.

Plus one short front, tall rear. that's how they all come from the factory.
This is one of those instances where checking with the service manual or fisches will mess you up.
They show short left front and right rear vice versa. If you open your bike and see that, it's just because that's what the Honda techs saw in the manual/Fische.

Is this the same on 5th gen? I don't remember them being different on my bike, but I've never been one to pay too much attention.

According to the Honda parts fiche all four velocity stacks on your '98 have the same part number Reg,so they're all the same size.

From the info that I have it appears that all USA model 5th gen. bikes run four equal length velocity stacks in their airboxes.

Normaly you put the shorter stacks on the front, the longer ones flow the air faster so they should be farther from the source. I messed up once on mine and had them in the wrong place. never noticed until I had to go back in for a bad injector. long story short is that you will not notice a difference in your bike no matter which way they are on. Now if you had long stacks (5" or more) on then they would make a big change. If you wanted you could run without stacks but I would advise against this as they are a line of defense for crap not going down the bores while your riding the twisties.

The longer ones, "flow the air faster?"
The stacks are there as a line of defense from getting stuff in your engine in the twisties?
