I ran across a CL ad for a 85 VF1000R. Been setting in garage 20yrs. Has only 5k miles all original supposedly mintish shape. Still has the factory tires on it. Here's the worst part, the po painted it all Red!?? Ad says he didn't like the multi colors. He's asking $3200 OBO.

Seeing the bike will have to be taken all apart for 20 yr maint/clean up plus deteriorated rubber bits and such, what is this bike really worth realistically? My thinking $1500-$2000k depending if all is as said. Otherwise towards may be a grand. Yes it's a rarer V4 but it's not stock paint so it's just another V4 to me basically.

Actually this bike may have been the one in Mansfield that was red for $1500. If it was then it's worth is about 500-1000 maaaaybe.? If not it might be a find for the right price. It's just I'm not sure what the right price really is. I sent him an email to see if I can look at it. I really like the VF1000 motors. It's just the bikes are heavy. VF's are second nature to me so working on it is no problem, depending on parts needed.

I am guessing it was not painted just because the owner did not like RWB on this rare earth magnet. Run Forest run.

email him the low-ball offer. What's it worth as parts?

bad time of year for him to sell a bike and you never know what the guy's real story is. He could be lucky to get someone to offer $1000 this time of year and might take the offer - eventually...

Talked to the guy this morning. He said it was running two years ago and just needs a battery. Which he was going to get so we could start it. Says it's mintish shape except for all red paint. I looked up the price on NADA for the R Model which has pricing of: Excellent of $5085, VG $3035, Good $1875 and Fair $1125. Which is more in line of what I've seen asking and sold prices on nice ones.

This bike only has 5k miles on it. To bad it's not original paint. I think the paint is what makes the bike worth the bigger dollars. I'm going to look at it in about an hour. We'll see.

If it had the original paint, then it would go for at least $5K. Without the original paint, in my opinion, it is worth next to nothing. I wouldn't offer him more than $1K.

May be a good one like it, BUT NOT that bike. Like I said before I think it's the bike I saw in the Mansfield CL for $1500. About the only mintish thing about the bike might be some green grunge on the under carriage! The paint looked like a backyard single stage put on heavy with questionable prep. A little wavy but it didn't have any runs in it. No seat cowl, all fluids supposed to be factory, ick. Fork seals leaking, looks like it's been down because the F1 slip-ons are: one bashed in above the slip joint and underside of other. Original rear shock, some sub fairing screws are missing. Still has the original tires on it.

The pro's are everything is there in restoreable shape that wouldn't take much. For me the whole bike has to be taken apart cleaned and serviced. Told him not for his asking price and said $2200 at best with all the stuff done. Plus said he has my number and if he doesn't sell it to call me. Realistically $800-$1000.........may be.

I had to check it out though. You never know until you do. I've had some good deals that way. Not this time.

Taking a bike out of the garage after 20 year of no use and riding it is like taking a condom that has been hangng out of its package in the basement for 20 years and expecting it to work proper. I suggest you need new rubber everywhere. Go for it if you want the project and can fund it I say.

New Tires $400. New Battery $150 ( I know he said he would give you one but it will probably be used junk). Gas Tank Rust $????. Repaint or New plastics if you can find $???? Leaky rubber seals?? All fluids change. Filters??

You basically need to buy this bike as a parts bike paying only for the good parts. When it was painted red it took all the "Collector" value away.

If you can get it cheap enough, it would be fun to try to restore but the laundry list of parts and dollars spent would be quite long.

    I love craigslist bullshitters.
The ad is posted 10/31/12 and says it runs like new.
You contact him and it hasn't ran in 2 years and "only" needs a battery.
Did he even get the bike running for you?
I also like his comment about "tired of dusting it off".
Uh oh guys, he's getting tired of showing a bike he is misrepresenting and asking way too much for. Look out....
