My first bike was a '00 Blackbird (and yes, a black one) and after that a '05 GSXR1000. When I sold the Bird I told myself that my next bike must be smaller for around town. Enter the Suzi. After the Suzi I said to myself I want a bike that's nice to ride in town and on long trips...and it must be a Honda seeing that between my first 2 bikes I think the Honda was put together much better than the Suzi...not that I'm saying the Suzi was cheap or bad! Fast forward to present day...

In my braai room ('built-in BBQ' in Afrikaans for those which are not from SA) at home I have the honour, which is accompanied by a HUGE grin, to look at a '01 VFR800Fi which is blue in color. After taking a 250km (156miles) round trip on Saturday, just to go look at it, I decided to buy it. She only has 36000km (22500miles) on the clock. Cosmetically not in the best shape, but that's why I hold on to my panel beater buddy  BUT after that first pull away and easing through the gears just cruising through the suburb I was sold.

There's, however, just a few things I'm concerned and/or not sure about. I need to take up some slack in the drive chain...no c spanner. But I would really like to replace with new chain and sprockets. Seeing that I don't have any idea when last it was serviced I would like to change the oil and filter, air filter, plugs and some fresh coolant after flushing the radiator...any other suggestions or ideas?

I also noticed that the R/R looks very new, actually brand new, compared to anything else on the bike and it is a genuine Honda unit...good or bad?

None the less I'm very happy and proud to finally be a VFR owner and I can't wait to get the service out the way and to put some more miles on her...

    Take Care guys!

R/R are honda's Achilles heel. next time it goes out replace it with an aftermarket or one from something else, a yammi probably the easiest source.

a valve check may not hurt, but then ive seen honda's with 100,k miles on them and no one ever checked the valves. if all is well and no coughs or sputters then good, if not then maybe a 1$ bottle of that walmart injector cleaner in the tank, its basically a half pint of diesel fuel. it helps the injectors clean up.

check the color of the clutch and brake fluid and bleed it if its dirty or overly dark.

i would say welcome but im kinda new to this forum myself, better to let one of the older members do the welcoming... (hazing?)
