I think it's time to replace the clutch.

    I pulled up to a stop light today and noticed a clinking noise when the clutch was pulled and I was stopped. It sounds like metal inside a can. I put the bike in neutral and noise stopped. Still drives fine and shifts very good but she just turned 96010 miles coming home from work. This will be the first clutch. I've read some of the other posts on clutch noise and I think this fits. Any thoughts or comments welcome. Thanks.

    I don't know. But in my mind, if I could get 96,000 out of any part that is continuously put to work, I'd say I've gotten my money out of it!

    I replaced my full clutch (metals, friction disks, new oem springs and a gasket) every thing was OEM. Soaked plates for a day or so before install. New metals didnt have the stippled dots like the old ones did, I noticed a difference with the clutch lever pull, bike goes into first gear from nuetral with a more authoritative clunk.

    Bike has some more balls when your getting over 120 mph or so, then it has a little more there. Other-wise bike with 76,000 miles rode pretty ok with old clutch pack. Might be the way I ride too, I coast to lights by down shifting to nuetral and just coast up to a stop. Watch your arse and have your foot ready to initiate a shift if something happens...Thats just me though, every time I see a motorcycle c0pper, his clutch is in, left foot is on the ground. They dont care about saving anything though anyway...

    So simply holding in your clutch handle while in gear at a stoplight is wearing your clutch? How?

    I dont think its wearing the disks oot, may wear out the springs? Its kinda like wives tales in my opinion. I coast up to lights, go down thru the gears, using the clutch and going thru all the gears until I reach second, then I snick it into nuetral and coast up to the light. This is just me though...others differ :smile:

    I know them donut slayers dont care about vee-hickles and have seen the aftermath of burnt out clutches on pos ST1300s. I think it was intentional though as they hated not riding an HD brand...
