Oh crap. The good news is carburetor assemble is off (much prying and rocking and letting it sit and coming back later and...). The bad news is, I broke it. I got carless with my pry bar setup and didn't notice the wood block and slipped under the shaft that links the two carbs together, so I bent that and broke off a little fitting. None of which I know the names for but the first pick below is what should be there on the end of the little piston/pin coming out of the bottom of each carb, and the next two are what is there now on the one that broke. The rod got bent and I broke the cast aluminum bushing, but epoxy can fix the busing and the rod straightened fine. So the little missing nubbin that allows the bystarter (according to the manual, is the fitting that is on the rod and connects to the carb) to pull out the pin. Very carless to have not noticed this was going on. It was very hard to get off but... oh well. now what? here is how it should be, the bystarter is the little fitting with the blue screw in the top that locks it to the rod and here is what is left on the one that broke, with the rod, spring, and bystarter removed So far the carb looks completely un"swampy". The gas is clean, no goo, no gunk. I strained the 2 gallons in the tank through a paper filter and not a trace of anything remained. Some of the rubber tubing is completely welded to the plastic fittings, but I just removed the other end in such cases.
That could happen if you're not watching proppaly or working in the dark  ??? but those parts are easy to replace, so no worries !~ The mangled bit (choke plunger) looks like every one i've ever seen on all models all years VFRs, easy to get replacements.
