I finally did the partial gut on my mufflers

Actually, the used mufflers I was able to pick up(just in case this didn't work out). Used the how-to found here. About 1.5 hours to do the disassembly, various cutting, reassembly. Then put the things on and tried them out this morning.

    Wow.

Nice rumble, louder than stock but nowhere near ear-hurting or nasty-loud. I like it. And NO resemblance to those little cars with the mufflers that make them sound like an asthmatic chainsaw.

The one thing I'd recommend doing different from the instruction is I'd cut the tips before using the hole saw; I just dislike those pipes flexing around while cutting.

how stupid would it be to just go inside the pipes and just cut some slits with the dremel and leave the rest in tact? my worry would be a tapping sound like an exhaust leak. but it could be a really fast and really easy way to beef up the sound and keep the appearance totally stock and the decibels down a bit. actually, as crazy as it sounds ive been thinking of a way to cut it open and drill holes in that pipe. then sleeve it from the inside with another pipe with holes that line up and a way to reach inside with a tool and twist it to close the holes for a stock sound. but i think it would leak and tap and sound like shit! but how cool would it be!? at any rate... dreams aside, what do yall think about trying to cut the slits?

It's an idea, but I have no idea how the cuts would affect the sound. With either an extension for the cutting wheels or a skinny handset that would fit in the pipe, could make cuts quite a ways in.

I would like to see some fuel runs and a roller run after this was done. While it may sound nice and feel different in the world of butt dyno's, the end result is generally a net loss. The VFR uses an undertail exhaust with twin cans much like my 04 FZ6. A muffler shop could build a Y pipe and hangers for cheap. The end result is you can run different baffles to get the sound right and that fuel/ roller run should show positive results.

So far mileage seems to be the same as before. Can't say I feel any difference in power/acceleration, but wasn't really expecting to.

Finally had a chance to get out on the highway for a short trip, and mileage stayed about the same: almost no wind, got about 52mpg. So a nice sound and no downsides I can find.

52 mpg!? Seriously? I don't think I could get that coasting downhill. How much do you weigh?

    About 185.

Here's what I've tracked since I got this bike: warm weather, around town, about 40mpg. Cold weather around town, about 37. Highway, around 42 if I have a headwind, with a tailwind around 50-52(that's keeping it around 75-80 if limits/conditions allow).

Once, coming home from a trip with a nasty gusting wind from the right rear, got 56. Which way the wind is blowing from does make a difference.
