I live in New England, so I have to deal with winter storage issues for my VF500. This wasn't a problem last winter (the first winter I had the bike), since I have room on the side of an unheated garage to park it inside for the winter. This year it's been in the same spot since the end of September. Yesterday I decided to take advantage of some warm weather and run it around the block a few times, just to keep things moving, and a LOT of fuel started dripping out onto my driveway. Here's what happened:

I filled the tank to the top before putting it away to prevent rust. After cranking it a few times it started as normal, but fuel was leaking profusely from two places. The first is from right below the back of the tank. There's a little metal device, with a nut on the bottom and what appears to be an overflow spout like on a float bowl on a carburetor. The fuel is dripping from the overflow valve.
The second leak is from an undetermined location, somewhere in the middle of the carbs, close to the airbox. I can't see the leak with the tank on the bike, and the airbox hides it with the tank off. This leak isn't from the float bowl overflows, and it puts out a lot of fuel that runs down the carbs, between the "V" of the cylinders and basically all over the place (like on the exhaust!). Both leaks only occur when the bike is running, but happen immediately upon starting.

I'm confused, as I've never had this problem before, certainly not before I put it in storage not that long ago, and not the winter before. the only difference is that I filled the tank to the very top.

    Any ideas?

As said, the leak between the carbs is most likely the plastic connector tubes, o-rings shot. Fuel leak from the tank, my 1st guess too is fuel expansion and overflowing.

Problem with leaving fuel in the system for storage is that ethanol in the fuel breaks down and becomes corrosive to rubber type parts in the system like the petcock diaphram and o'rings.

Thanks! But I don't use ethanol.

I use chainsaws for landscaping and ethanol was causing too many problems, so first I switched to avgas, but eventually found a couple gas stations near me that sell ethanol free premium, so I've been using that in my bike for a couple months. Drying out makes sense, it's just odd it happened that fast this time and not for the whole winter before.

I guess that means I'll have to find some new o-rings.

    Thanks for the input.
