1983 vf750f stuck in 3rd gear

Went on a ride this weekend, 5 miles in to the ride i came up to a signal and when it turned green, i took off and almost stall it, it was i 3rd gear and will not shift up or down. shift lever and linkage is good. it got to be internal. I do not have a manual yet, byt looks like i will be needing one. where sould i start, sprock side or clutch side?

 

Clutch side, if the lever still moves that is a good sign for an easy fix. Here is a parts picture, it is a much less complicated design that later models.

Probably a bent shift fork. Since your clutch still disengages that means it's ok. The bad news is that you will have to pull the engine and split the cases to fix this. Sorry!

 

I had spring #17 or #18 in Toe's link that broke in my 750 that messed things up a bit. Worth a look.

 

I have had several of those springs break where it contacts the arm so sticking a fork in it may be way too premature. Still could be an easy fix, kinda depends on if the lever is stuck or not. If it is stuck you have screwed the pooch.........a dalmatian in case you were wondering.

 

Worth pulling the clutch side case cover for a quick inspection. Best to not get hopes up too far though, at least that is my experiences.

It was the #17 spring... got parts ordered. next problem can't find the broken spring parts inside oil pan, have been fishing with a magnet for awhile, looks like i will be pulling the oil pan.

I had that spring break in a 700 nighthawk once. Bad thing about that model was you had to pull the motor out of the frame to get the clearance needed to change it out. I also had to pull the oil pan to find the broken spring. If I remember right I found it in the oil screen. I remember thinking Honda could have made it much easier to get to. Glad you figured it out.

 

So, I have this same problem. My #17 spring broke. I was able to fish it out of the oil pan. But I don't know where to get a replacement. I contacted Bikebandit, and they say it is no longer available. Does anyone know where it can be ordered, or am I destined for the never ending search? I see Rj3nk was able to order one back in 2012.

Any help would be much appreciated!
