I've just bought an '85 500 interceptor. Posted as not running, just needs timed. I responded to the ad, wife says "hubby's a good rider, bad mechanic". He had taken the coils off, why IDK, and was pretty sure the spark plug wires weren't right. The bike looked pretty good, in the dark garage, and the price was right so I took a chance. Long story short, after a couple days looking the the forums here, and a couple hours tinker time, it started last night. It sounds a little rough, hadn't been started in 6-7 months, but no smoke no weird smells, etc. I'm going to change fluid, and set the valves this weekend, and go from there.

    Forward a couple days

Last Saturday, I checked the oil (a little low, but reasonable for a 1/2 mile down the road and back), filled the coolant tank (was empty, should have been my first clue), quick mile round trip to see if anything felt weird suspension wise. Get back home sounds a little noisy, so I check the oil again ( not on the stick) added 1 1/2 quarts to get to the proper level. Pop the radiator cap ( temp gauge never moved from cold), bone dry.
So, I filled the cooling system made sure it was circulating and let the bike run for a few minutes. Sounds quieter, still everything seems normal. Then, black goo from the radiator filler neck. I kill the engine drain the coolant and presto oil in the coolant, check the oil, coolant in the oil. So I guess I'm replacing the head gaskets. I've done this before on my Goldwing, not a problem. Does anyone know of a supplier that still produces head gaskets for the 500?

Thanks Creaky, I'll tear into it, hopefully this weekend. I was hoping to just source a new HG's, but that looks like a no go.
