Quick question-------- on replacing my oem filter with a K&N. It said to remove the o ring from lid and base ---There was either. Put the filter in, made sure it was seated with the lid and bottom base, snugged it up with the screws and now there is a 1/16 to 1/8 of a gap between the base and lid. The oem was a hard plastic and the K&N is rubber ,so I think its OK plus the tank went down with no problem. Just was woundering if that was normal for this kind of filter. Thanks

I have a k&n and I still have both of my o-rings. I never had the oem filter so I don't know about the gap. Mine has about the same amount of gap from being flush as well. I wouldn't worry about it so long as the filter is in the grooves and snug with no air gaps. Hope I helped some anyway

I can remember putting a K & N filter on my 97 VFR a few years back and noticing the gap was larger as well. If I recall, the flange on the K&N filter was a tad bit thicker than the stock filter.

I have a K&N in my VFR 2000 and yes you absolutely do take the rubber o ring thing out. All bikes I have put K&N air filters in, the rubber ring needed removing.
As long as the cover is on nice and tight it wont leak through thanks to the million and one, mile long screws holding her down.
