Egocentrism makes all want to be the best at something. This moves people to do "strange" things to show how good they are. When others point out how "interesting" they're accomplishments are, they tend to get upset. To try and dissuade them from partaking in their endeavors robs them of their chance of recognition and fame on ridiculousness or dumbest stuff on wheels or even youtube. In effect the ego is the antithesis of self preservation. No amount of concern will convince them to desist with their activity, as they mistake that concern with jealousy for their accomplishments.
