Hi im new to this forum, i have a BIG problem on my hands and am not quite sure what my best option will be so any advice is greatly appreciated..... i own a 99 vfr 800 and, one day i was out, pulling away from a junction i decided to open her up a wee bit, 1st, 2nd, changing into 3rd the chain snapped.... and wrapped itself round the front sprocket, killing the engine in the process....(my own fault, chain was too tight)...i was able to coast to a stop harmlessly and upon arrival home we managed to release the chain and the bike still started and idled, but id lost 1st gear..... 2nd, 3rd etc all fine, even neutral was ok, and she still drove, just no 1st. Now, i have the bike in the lock up, and i have consulted a manual but as soon as i took out the water pump to inspect for damage, 2 pieces of sprocket followed the water pump shaft in falling out that hole..... oh, and my clutch slave cylinder housing wont go back on without a struggle. The engine is now out the bike and awaiting a mech guy to come see, but in the meantime id like to find out what parts im likely to b needing, so i know whether or not id b cheaper replacing the engine as a whole..... i might add, the mechanic i have is a family friend and cost isnt worth worrying about labour wise. Thanks guys, really looking forward to a response

How many miles are on the bike? If it's high mileage then you might consider a lower mileage unit.

    Not sure about your area...

But here motors are pretty cheap. And I'm the kind if person that can't open up a motor that far without doing a complete rebuild (rings, bearings, seals, etc). So recently when I was faced with the a similar conundrum, the parts cost was hundreds of dollars more and many weeks of time compared with buying a running used motor.

Sounds like your aluminum castings may all be ok (no broken bosses) since all the other gears work. Keep us posted!

Yeah all casings and stuff are still whole, I wrecked my hugger and chainguard but thats a small matter... A complete engine sells for around 500pounds over here, and finding a good one aint so easy..... The bike had 32k miles on er b4 this tragic fail, however my guy came and picked up said engine this morning and took it away for examination..... Fingers crossed all is well, I will keep u posted on his verdict, I feel a project coming on...... :faint: .... Thanks guys:cool:

man, that's tough. I stripped the threads on a spark plug a year or two ago and it was cheaper in my case to just buy a new engine than to pay a mech to pull the heads and put a heli-coil in or time-cert or whatever the heal the new thread things are called. I ended up getting a used low mile engine and it took me and a frined one day to pull old engine that another day to get new engine in, then a couple hours of a 3rd day in buttoning up little stuff. To me, an engine swap is easier than a rebuild... Lookin inside an engine is almost as bad as going into a woman's purse.

It happens !! I bought a cherry, dirt-cheap '87F2 a few years ago from a frustred owner that wrapped it's chain, taking out most the sprocket cover and clutch slave mounting bolts and holes. Coulda bent the output shaft too ?? Didn't want to deal with that, so.................

Luckily i found a good engine for the bike from Houston, shipped it in and did the transplant then sold it--after i'd enjoyed riding it a bit-- in superb condition (pearl and gold) to a middle age Air Force Reserve pilot, former Viet Nam heli pilot, who loved the bike and rode it hard, and i made few buck$ to invest on the next VFR project.:cheersaf: And i got a good Kerker setup off that bike to fit on an '86 that needed it.:whoo:

Sadly i no longer have the shop space for projects like that now. :frown: : :frown:
