    Hi all

Just thought id drop you all a line. Iam going to start a ground up rebuild on a 1986 VF500F2F.
Bit of nostalgia for me as i bought one new in 1984 and loved it to bits before some kind person stole it 3 months later.
The bike is a HRC race colours $(KGrHqV,!rUE-l,ewkBYBPsmqZqq7Q~~_12.JPG one lady owner with 18k miles on the clock. It is in a totally unmolested state every nut and bolt on her is untouched.
Its a long way off mint as its has been found under a sheet parked up for the last 6 years but it does run.

Will post a few pics during rebuild for you all to see when the bike gets delivered this week.
Should be fun and will be pickin all you experts for advice.

    Cheers Dave UK

It definitely looks like a great starting point for a restore - it's mosting intact. The '86 500 is at the top of my list of favorites. I look forward to see how it comes out.

And the bike looked so good in the first pic and yet when you get close (as you appear to have done so) you can see the after effects of 6 years of neglect. You seem to be doing a very thorough job. Any reason for converting to the cast wheels from the comstars? I have a set of both too. Always wondered why Honda went to the trouble of making two sets.

It's a great bike. just wish mine was a bit better on fuel.

No reason for the two sets of wheels just can't resist a ebay bargin, but they will be easier to refurb than the comstars. Whys yours so bad on fuel ?

It's not terrible just not as good as my more modern alternatives. If I ride it as a similar pace to my norm I get mid to low 30s mpg(UK gal.) which is pretty crap when I can 45mpg out of FJR and Gixer for the same speed. This isn't going mad either. I have checked everything and the carbs/valves/airfilter/idle screws/exhaust are all OK as far as I can tell. I love riding the VF but when it comes to long runs in Europe my wallet forces me to take one of the other bikes. A nice problem to have I know...

Looks like i will be holding on to the BMW GS you can see in the pic's for long runs  was planning on finishing my biking career on classic jap 80's bikes. May see how my other project a Yamaha FZ750 FN circa 1985 goes before i decide.

Well it might just be mine. People on here claim stellar mileage for the VF (+50s) so you could be lucky. Mine is lowish on compression (130-150psi) which can't help. I bought it last year after it had been hardly used for many years so it might have gummed up rings.

I remember the FZ750 well. That's the 5 valves per cylinder job. There were some good 750s back then. I think the air cooled GPz750 was probably the most successful apart from Gixer of course.
