5th gen, gotchas when replacing a windscreen?

    Hi,

    I recently got a 2001 VFR800 in stock condition with 13K miles (always wanted one, about time :) ). I'm 1.85m (6'1") and I'm getting a lot of wind to my body (compared to VStrom, GSXR1000, for instance), so I ordered a replacement windscreen (DB type) to see if it would help with highway+ speeds.

    I looked at the service manual, and it would appear that I need to take the mirrors off and their plates and rubber base (2 screws x2), and the inner front cowl covers (1 screw x2) and the windscreen screws (1 screw x2 - just between the mirror screws):

    My question is, is it as straight forward as it sounds? Do I need special tools (other than allen keys), anything else I should take into account?

    It's not difficult. Be sure to clean the front cowl under the wind screen while you have it off. It's difficult to clean with the screen installed.

    The swap can be done is in under a half hour, including cleaning.

    It's real easy, probably better get used to it, it is a ongoing battle to try to eliminate most of the wind blast. About the third time I changed the screen I siliconed the rubber and plate to the mirror base, just makes it quicker.

    Well, it was pretty straight forward indeed (and thx for the cleaning tip, it was quite dusty down there :) ).

    However, one of the metal screw holes - the one for the inner cowl cover screw - got loose out of the plastic cylinder and broke. The plastic cylinder itself seems intact. So for now the new windscreen is held with 3 screws instead of 4 (seems solid enough for temporarily staying like that), and I need to find a way to fix it. I was suggested to fill the plastic cylinder with epoxy glue, screw the screw into it, and gently screw it out as the glue dries, hopefully to make a solid screw hole out of epoxy. If anyone got another idea, I'd welcome other suggestions/tips. I should probably also check with the dealer, but I guess requiring a new front fairing might be their suggestion, and one I'm not sure I'm willing to take before trying out other solutions.

    The new DB screen is higher than the original and is a bit similar to the 6th gen screens, so it makes the front of the bike appear teller. A bit ugly, but if it works, then I can live with that. I didn't yet ride it enough to conclude, but it does make a difference and does take much of the wind off the body, but I still need to decide/check if it makes the turbulence around the helmet much worse.
