I've got an 85 vf700f with the sole of a VF1000f (engine transplant). I had no option but to re-use the vf700f exhaust system. My question is does anyone know what kind of "magic" happens inside the collector under the engine? Has anyone ever gutted the thing? Would that hurt or help. If the crap in there is only for sound management, then would it flow better if it was gutted?

AND.... If if was gutted, would it be possible to block off one side and go single exhaust?

    Thoughts?

the collector has to do with balancing pressure and maintaining torque across a wide range of RPM. There really is nothing to gut, it's like an expansion chamber similar to what you see on modern day two stroke engines. There are photos on the forum somewhere of one that's cut open but I don't have time to try and track it down at the moment.

k, I will award 2 cool points to anyone who can point out the link to the photo of the cut open collector. I guess I'm too stupid to find it on my own.

The only real benefit would be to gain some ground clearance as they tend to scrape the ground pretty easy when cornering.

So headers would take away some of the power then

I'm no expert but you would game some hp/torque on the high end rpms and lose on the bottom end. Hard to imagine less on the bottom though.

in theory, the stock exhaust would be tuned for best torque at normal operating RPM and as flat a torque curve as possible.

If you want better sound and looks and are willing to risk the possibility of sacrificing 1-3lb/ft of torque and possibly peak HP, then go for it. Do it right and with a little research behind you and you could probably break even or maybe even get some improvement in one area or another. Just depends on what you're goal is.

You should be able to do a baseline Dyno run at a local shop for around $60 that would give you your air/fuel ratios. (no tuning or adjusting). Especially coming into winter now. Then play all you want and you can verify your results later.

I'm with bikeman then. Based on typical exhaust theory, probably less low RPM torque and more peak HP. Probably not enough of a difference that the average rider would know the difference using the seat-o-the-pants dyno method

    Thanks Tink, as promised
    .. (two cool points!!!)

I had no idea all that crap was inside the rusty old beat up collector. I figured there was a few cheep baffles in there, something I could dig out with a screwdriver - no way that is going to happen. I was really hoping to make one big expansion / "crossover" out of the collector, then close off the left side and run a large single muffler.
