I have read a couple statements here that say they have modified their stock air box to flow better.....Could someone tell me how exactly that is done. I just installed a K&N filter and if theres something I can do EASY to improve the flow even more that would be great. Thanks in advance, Dean

You may want to search on "snorkel" or "desnorkel" and "air box mods". There's been plenty of discussion on this topic in the past. While I don't remember any hard data, you may get some insight. For the most part, I think the answer to the "should I modify my air box?" question is NO, but read on and form your own opinion. Hopefully you'll be the guy with the dyno charts to put the debate on your model to rest.

I pulled the snorkel out of mine this spring, & placed a few washers under the front tank mount to increase air flow. Did it improve power??? hard to say because I had it apart to clean the air filter(K&N) & found a very large mouse nest. So yes, it seemed to run quite a bit better afterwords but it was pretty much choked off before that. If nothing else it sounds really cool & with the increase velocity under the tank you get a little buzz through the tank that will jingle your bells @ a certain RPM. Whether or not thats a good thing is a personel opinion. I definelty would not punch a bunch of holes in the air box cover though, atleast if you pull the snorkel you can put it back in if you don't like the results. The other way your kind of committed

It made a noticable difference on my 1000, but once again, I did plugs and wires the same day, so that could be part of it. I think, and this is my opinion, that the snorkles are a bit small to flow 100HP.

Removing them should not affect the A/F ratio, and if it means that you have to step up the jets, then you've affected the air flow into the motor. My motor now seems to run a little leaner judging from the popping under decelleration (not bad just the occassional pop.) and the fact that it now lights up the rear tire quick a bit more obviously under accelleration would further indicate that it's making some more power... only question... what was the cause? I also gained 4 MPG on the last tank of gas.

If it was just the plugs and wires, so be it. Opening up the snorkles does make for a nice sound... and I am sure that the Yoshi pipes that I will be putting on tonight will only enhance that sound. Removing the snorkles while in there to get to the air filter takes only a few brief seconds... pull out the air box and it will be obvious what has to go.

I took the llid off my airbox completely, and fastened the filter on with clips. Is my '86 vfr 700 gonna implode?

i removed the lid and it was terrible. i had horrible turbulance at high rpms so i made my own little rig. i took my honda civic airfilter and cut it in half to make it fit in my air box on my vf500f. AMAZING. the reason i was getting so much turbulance was there was wayyyy too much air coming into my engine at once with no real direction of flow. now its filtered out and slightly restricted. so if you want a little more power *which i do notice quite a bit* and a little more deep throaty sound then get a honda civic or regular rectangle air filter and fit it into your airbox. good luck for anyone who tries this.

I always remove snorkel, maybe lose a bit of power, but that great, huge, dramatic sucking noise is worth it and makes it sound more like a V -8.

Drill holes only with a jetkit, which isn't much help.

I for one have tried every combination known to man and run a stock air box with snorkel, Drilling holes in the air box just ruins the air box and removing the snorkel just makes more noise.

INTAKE noise sucking sound=good and not obnoxious like overly-loud exhaust.

It's related to music, and combined with gearwhine, is the auditory signature of the essential VFR.

Only the rider hears intake roar while general public is exposed to your "ausfart"

Probably lose fractional HP but not enuf to notice.

Snorkel may be fitted to smooth airflow and increase power...........or to reduce noise to meet EPA regs, like exhaust.

Even if dyno proved slight power loss with snorkel removed, i'd do it for the sound !

No the snorkel is the directed tubing that enters the airbox from the front. A lot of used bikes don't have them for some reason. Guessing people discarded them when they didn't know better.

Yeah I got snokers....on both air boxes......maybe it would be good to pipe it with some flex pipe....so the air will get in....couse right now it looks like its not doing much....like squirlman sad cut it out....and it will sound like a v8...but then I got hole in box...2 by 4....so it same like drilling 10 holes in the box........not more.....I guess....in that one air box that I got someone drill like 150. Holes heh....
