Hi all, my bike (new to me) has 30k miles on it, little to no maintanance done and trying to catch it up. How often are you guys needing to adjust the valves? looks like a pain.

    What about plugs, every 12k?

its not un-daunting to get the valve covers off and turn the motor over with a socket on the end of the crank and check the valves. They rarely go out on these generation bikes from my experience and hearing people talk here over the years. I did mine at 30,000 miles and again at 60,000 miles, none were out of spec.

Plugs are easy enough to change. The real bastard and the thing that pays the best dividends is carburetor synchronization. The nasty thing is that your gona burn the fuck out of your hand while you try to get to them adjustment screws. Total assinine set-up as you have to use a dental mirror and work backwards (was telling my dentist this story and didnt get any sympathy as he said, "I do this every day.") If done properly your bike will idle nicer and take throttle right from the first cunt-hair. Once done, me thinks that it would stay good for 20,000 - 30,000 miles...Cheers and have fun fer gawds sake :drinkers:

I'll be doing valves and carb sync on my 95 sometime this fall/winter/spring, and will post some photos and comments here. If I have to take things apart to change shims I'm going to drill the ends of the cam holders to get rid of the hot ticking noises too.

RiderVFR is correct on what a pain the carb sync is. To keep from burning my hand I got an old military spec nomex flight glove to wear when I have to stick my hand in the V between the carbs. Haven't been burned since. I use a 3/8 drive socket that I machined flutes on the sides to grip it. Works great.
