Nice work. I'm trying to do the alps from a base camp in Munich. Ride a different road every day. That would be Aug of next year.

How much time you've got, and in which month? And why Munich? If you go in June or September, you don't have to book one hotel, you can easily just go where you like, and when you stop there will be enough choice of free rooms in the hotels. In Juli or august that would be more difficult.

edit: sorry, need to learn to read properly :)

I suppose you will be renting a bike there?

Yes, I would rent a bike. There is a thread about a guy who rented a bike (cbr1000) in Munich (somewhere) for approx 100 Euro/day.
Munich: because I have friends there and could probably stay for free.
Aug: It doesn't have to be Aug. Just seems like a very warm month. Sept would work.

Well, July and August are the holiday months, so avoiding those months means less traffic on those roads (slow caravans, mobile homes, ...) and easier to get hotel rooms, but the hotels wont matter if you're sticking to Munich ;) Also, if you go in June: in the first few weeks of June you might bump into some closed roads (those that were not yet cleared of snow)

Status of those passes can be checked here:
Wintersperre und Verkehrslage Alpenpässe - Alpen-Motorrad-Guide

If i may make a suggestion: being able to stay in munich for free is nice, but maybe you could do some trips of 2 to 3 days where you spend the night in other hotels, so you can see more of the alps. You might be able to do 1000km trips on regular roads, but your average speed in the alps will be low, so 400km is a really long haul (i averaged 200 to 300km's each day in the french alps). Just an idea: a 2 to 3 day trip to the dolomites in italy would be nice ;) I've havent been there myself yet, but many agree its motorcycle paradise ;)

Another great site in english that may help:
"www.AlpineRoads.com - The Best Biking Roads In The Alps"

I've been reading Alpineroads.com for a while. Those guys are pretty good. I'll think about your advice. Munich might be the base camp and I could ride out for 1-2 day trips. Who knows. Nothing set yet.
