Hey what's the secret to getting these carbs in? I installed the boots on the front carbs per the factory manual but still can't get them on. The boots are a little age hardened but not too bad.
Help! This is my first VFR.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Lots of helpful hints if you search, seldom or never an easy job.

Here's one: Lube both ends of the mounts and install them loosely (partially on, not fully) on the cylinder head at an ANGLE that gets them closely in line with the carbs as they get toward the mounting position. Pushing the carbs in should align the boots with the heads.

Pointer in photo shows a gap where the boot isn't fully seated.

Second photo shows what could go wrong if too much force is used before proppa alignment.

I soaked my boots in silicone solution for a few days, softened them up quite a bit. Applied silicone grease to the insides of the boots, set the boots on the heads at an angle as squirrelman describes, carbs went in easily. I've read that softening the boots with a heat gun or hair dryer helps, have never tried that.

Thanks. I got them on but I don't think they are fully seated. I'll yank them off and try the method y'all described.
Got another problem though... I accidentally broke the brass piece off that supplies vacuum to the petcock. I looked on a parts schematic but I don't see it. Is this part still available or is there an alternative? I was able to get the broken piece out of the cylinder head.
    Thanks again,
    Jim

Here's a pic of the broken piece
    [IMG]
It looks like a something that would be used to sync the carbs and not a Honda item. I could be wrong...

    Also, I have this issue:

I don't think the pan head screw in the center of the pic is supposed to be there. Is there supposed to be a plug there? This is on the number three carb. It also looks like someone tried to replace a couple plugs with some JB weld.
