This winter I plan on adding some power for heat and gps. This is what I'll be getting.

No permanent mounting and I can just keep it in my tank bag which is always on my bike anyway.

Mine has been Zip-Tied to the steering head next to the ignition switch for about 18 months.
    No problems, not noticeable.
My GPS mounts to a Ram mount on the tank bolts so it is quite handy.
Used a large heavy duty Zip-Tie.

You can also get a powerlet outlet that goes up the steering stem. It costs around 60 bucks if memory serves. It's not a 12v, so if you want to charge a phone on it or something you'll have to buy their expensive mini-USB adapter, but as far as something like a heated vest goes, it's the standard outlet type for BMW and Triumph accessories.

Go to Powerlet Products - Rugged power outlets, cables and electronics or Wire My Bike, they should have plenty of options/ideas for you. Here is the one that goes in the steering stem. Wire My Bike

I think what Tyarosevich is saying is that it's not your standard 12v cigarette lighter socket, not that it is not 12v, but that is not the case with every adapter, some have the "powerlet" socket (i.e. BMW type. Requires adapter) and others have the cigarette lighter socket. The one that goes through the steering stem however, is the powerlet type. If you went with the steering stem unit, it would run you close to $75 just for the hardware ~$50 for socket, ~$24 for the adapter. So unless your devices have a powerlet plug, you'll need to always carry the adapter cable.

Thanks guys, this has been helpfull and confusing abit, anyway what I have is a cigar lighter type socket that connects directly to the battery, from Cycle Gear. It has no fuse, so that is concerning, probably run one inline. I was tinkering around today looks like mounting next to the ignition switch will work. I want it visiable so I can put a volt meter/gauge in it to monitor the voltage regulator output and run a gps if needed.

I mounted a cheapie auto parts store outlet on the left side fairing just under the left handlebar with velcro on my 92.
Works fine for my tank bag. It was nice to be able to charge my Mp3 player and GPS on the fly.

Powerlet on the passenger footpeg mount always worked great on my bikes.
Also check this out if you are looking for a simple way to add a USB, and already have a charger connector on your battery.

Call it OCD... but having the text upside-down would drive me insane!

Besides that, nice clean looking install.
