Right or left is indicated from the position when sitting on the machine. Cowl is the term used in the service manual, no surprise as to why that would have been confusing.

Great...thanks guys! My VF'er is NON-ABS I'm finding out when I thought the breaks acted like ABS - hey, learn something new everyday! Stayed up late putting stuff up last night and researching, but am getting ready to get on it now. I'll let you all know what I find out. Also, I did switch from hi to lo visa versa and nothing...

My bet is on the starter button sticking a little bit. Go ahead and check your fuse. If it is good there, then check the switch housing on the right side handlebar.

UPDATE: Hilarious - God works I tell yah! The lights came on! I pushed the start sw a few times - with the key off, and turned to ON for a few seconds - they came on after a few seconds then shut off, but turned the engine on and they kicked back on, so they are still acting funny, but at least they are ON BABY! So,what do you think is the problem - the starter sw which they are wired through?

After you find the proper plug connector, you can test the headlight contacts on the start switch with a multimeter.

MEATLOAF - W(here)TF yah been man lol!? Never see your bike..? But, then again, haven't been riding much lately (have put 5Kmiles since I got it though - new to me in May). PM me your number and I'll give yah a buzz.

Anyway, for everyone that has helped I appreciate it and thanks! The winner is - it's the start button/sw. I turned the bike off at one of our stops, and when I turned it on - no lights - turned off and pushed the starter a few times then YEEEEEPPP lights again. So, I'm guessing it's a short someplace either at the switch or in one of the connectors..??

I've been held up inside since I had a lady pull out in front of me in mid-May and I broke my foot. Still haven't gotten paid by the insurance for getting the bike fixed so I haven't been riding much.

As far as your issue, its just a sticky switch. You can take the switch housing apart and clean the switch out and put it back together. I can't remember if it calls for some dielectric grease in there as well or not. Perhaps one of the others can chime in here. Super easy fix. 10 minutes at most.

Awesome...thanks for that and glad you're okay man! Won't get into the women drivers, BUT haha one went off the road in front of my brother and I on our bikes and bout clipped a mail box a month or so ago - could have been pretty serious (right off Goyer). Hopefully that insurance co. gets you a pretty new VF'r and some coin in the bank ;) - not fun to go through I understand that! Don't know your age, but I went to school around the time of Brook T., she's older than I, - sounds like she's getting a few mil out of her deal; which I hope she gets and the dude gets what he deserves in jail (kokomo swimmer that her coach was taping, etc.). Wow, getting way off topic, but thanks again and yea lets ride before the snow gets here. I'll take the assembly off this week and clean it out.

We'll definitely have to get together sometime. If you need any help, let me know. Short of being inside the engine, there isn't a part on the VFR that I've not had my hand on and dealt with.

As far as the bike is concerned, things should be taken care of shortly. I sent in the final paperwork to get things taken care of on Friday so I should be able to start fixing things soon. Luckily for me, 97% of the damage was cosmetic. Short have having to fab a footpeg and bend my brake lever back in shape, there was nothing mechanically wrong with the bike.

Next time you re up, give me a shout. I used to commute from home to Surrey every day before I retired. That is only, depending on time of day, an hour away. I drive that far for coffee. Will drive twice that far for a beer. ANd so long as there is no snow on the ground, I will ride there.
