    Hello,

This is my first post and technically this is my first Bike so I'm very new and hope I can get some help! Currently in the Navy working in Camp Lejeune. I just recently rode my bike from Norfolk VA to Jacksonville NC.

It was about a 3 hour ride I stopped multiple times just to relax never really pushed my bike maybe once or twice on an empty back road. But as I was getting closer to my destination at about 60 miles an hour in 4th Gear my bike started to jerk and lose power then all of a sudden just shut off.

I was able to start my bike while i riding (Not sure if that was good or bad). After I started it up again she drove just fine and got to the walmart parking lot where i thought it was the oil so I added some oil.

    Now some extras:
1)My exhaust got ripped off my bike while I was stationed in San Antonio Texas.
    2) I believe I do need an oil change but im not sure.
    3) Dont know if this matters but I have a power commander on it as well.

It also did the same thing today as I was riding to work. Now it was cold in the morning but I did let it run a little bit and it ran well for about half way there and then shut off had to start it again. So im not sure what is going on.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated as I really dont have the money to go get it checked because Im about to be deployed and had to pay a bunch of bills off. I am going to change the Oil this weekend as well so.

    Thank you Very much,
    God Bless,
    Galvao, Derek Hospital Corpsman USN

I'm an IT1 about 2 hours north of you in Elizabeth City, NC (work up on Little creek JEB). If you trust it to ride up this weekend I'm sure we can figure it out. I have a garage and tools and food. Don't be shy.

Without seeing it or more info I don't know enough to make a guess. If it was in storage for awhile have you checked the air filter? Sometimes critters make homes in the airbox. Also, I haven't had a 6th gen for about 4 years and I don't rember but if it sat for awhile I'd check/replace the fuel filter. I really doubt it's oil related. Oil either works or it doesn't.

Your problem is either fuel related, electrical related or air related.

PM me if you want to come up. Good luck on your deployment and if you need a place to store your VFR let me know. I have garage space and two VFR's that enjoy company and I promise I'll keep your gas and oil fresh!!!!

    Let do some testing
Let pull the fairing out and check all the harness and all the connectors for burn or melt.
Check battery to make sure it hold the juice
Check the voltage of the RR and stator
Question, how many miles on the bike?

I am not a techie by any means but that sounds strikingly like what I ran into in Vegas this past spring. It ended up being the stator. Has a shop find that out AFTER i spent money on a battery I may not have needed. Test, test, test. Guessing is expensive. Oh. As far asa the oil goes, Don't add any oil unless the level is below specs. It is easily checked through the sight glass down on the side of the motor.

Wow all great support appriciate it!

I'm actually a HN taking the third class exam tomorrow! I'm a Preventive Med Tech doing all the inspections and STD clinics and working with the Marines.

As far as the mileage it's has about 19500 on it right now. I haven't check any of the air filter or fuel filter only beause Im on temp orders here En route to Norfolk so no tools.

But I feel confident to Ride up I'll need to set up my phone gps and a good headset to get to your house IT1 but I think I could deff do it!

As far as the battery when I bought it the owner said he had recently put a new battery in it so. And for storage I will have to see if anything got into the air filter but the storage place was pretty tight and bike was covered pretty well!

You guys are awesome thanks for the help so far!

Good luck on HM3! I know your rate is locked down and advancement is a bitch so you'll need the luck. Sounds good, I'll text/PM you my address. It's pretty simple ride though. I think Highway 17 is a straight shot from you to me.

Years ago I had a similar issue on an FZR. I turned out to be the sidestand switch that kills the engin if you put the bike in gear with the stand down. Apparantly at a certain engine speed, the vibration was causing it to open/close and kill the engine!
Good luck troubleshooting and let us know what you find!

That is a very interesting observation hell-Pilot! Im taking a trip to see Jack this weekend and we are going to go through my whole bike so i will deff keep an Eye out for that!

Yeah its been getting worse and also I kinda feel like my bike is getting hotter than usual. My average ride temp when im actually riding is around 200 in 80 degree weather.

Its about 223 when im stopped in traffic on base just for like 10 mins... I dont know if thats right but I have a feeling it isnt. So today in traffic just sorta turned off. I mean I was able to turn it back on of course and keep riding but seems kinda weird.

Overall I love my bike and everyone else says it looks great and they never seen a VFR before! Love it!

    We'll figure it out. I'm hoping it's a loose/bad connection somewhere that'll just require a lil attention.

This why I have kids. My 10 year old has tiny hands so we'll just have her did around  I'm kidding. We'll get it.

Details are very important. Shut off as in engine stopped and instrument cluster is still on or shut off and no power to anything? Not busting balls but the fine points may make the difference.

Yep, don't forget we also lubed/adjusted that chain of yours, put some air in those tires and.............nearly got stranded on the way home Sunday morning!!!! Ha! So, I had theories on why it kept cutting out. Seemed like a lean running condition especially after we tested it out after we did all the work Saturday evening. Well, it was running decent but about 50 miles into our ride home Sunday it wasn't getting fuel at all, surging hard and wouldn't rev past 6K rpm.

We pulled over in the middle of nowwhere NC. Proceeded to take off the Power Commander (I figured it wouldn't hurt and since we were out of options why not). That seemed to be the culprit. It ran fine to the middle of our ride and Galvs made it home with no issues so I think that is what was causing the shitty running.

I've never used a Power Commander and both of my current bikes have carbs so I have very little to no experience with Power Commanders. Galvs has no experience with them either.

All in all, a good weekend. Got a good bike up and running better. Next wrench session we'll be bleeding the clutch and brake lines and maybe flush out the coolent if Galvs is up to it.

Good to now. Thanks for the info. I'm suprised I haven't seen you rolling around on your '02. I ride to JEB nearly every day from NC.
