Im looking at the replace R/R's from Roadstercycle-Index. The output side of the regulator only has 2 wires, a positive and ground. However when looking at my bike and through the Service Manual mine has 5 wires. 2 greens that go to the ground. Two positives, one that goes straight to the positive on the battery terminal, and one that goes through the ignition switch. Then I have a straight black (maybe brown) that I'm not sure where it goes to..?

When you replace the R/R do you have to account for these other wires? Im most concerned with the one going to the ignition switch. Will I need to rewire for this?

Will a VFRNess harness take care of this for me? Just trying to do some research before I buy any parts. Make sure I know what Im doing.

    Thx.

Stuff for if you get the Roadstercycle kit -- you wont need to buy the VFRness. Then you probly have a stock R/R plug that goes to the main harness like - (heres a 5th gen pic) -- I know the 6th gen is positioned up front. It has the 2 red wires and 2 greens just like you say.

-You will be totally ignoring this connector and not using it anymore. Most guys just tape it up. It's not neccessary but I went a step farther and sealed it up. --(Liquid tape and heat schrink tubing is fun stuff to play with.)

Now what you will be doing is that there are 2 power wires from the R/R. You will be wiring them direct to the battery. The positive side will have a fuse and go straight to the positive terminal. -- Pic for a clean way to do it. ----

-The ground from the R/R is no major deal, you can go direct to the battery or mount direct to the frame ground. - Then there are 3 yellow wires that go to the stator. --- What I would do with this stuff is that Jack over at Roadstercycle has the connectors and wiring you will need. Since the 6th gen R/R is mounted up front, you might need some extra length with the wires. Get a rough guess as to wire lengths and the talk or trade emails with Jack as to his recommended method to connect with the stator wires. (Some guys solder and some use heavy duty connectors. I did the HD connector route, but ended up buying automotive crimp tool to do it. Kinda pricy.)

-- You asked about will you have to rewire ignition... the answer -- no. You wont have to touch that.

    - Lastly the stock before and the rewire after connection diagram looks like....(I'm running a Compufire R/R but the connections are the same)

--- I hope this helps for a start. I'm happy to walk you through this if you would like.

Here's a good reference thread - lots of great ideas here..

Also specifically for a 6th gen R/R wire up...

Again - a different R/R but look at the pics for ideas.

Thanks for the input. Great info. When I compare what I see in my manual vs your 'before' image Im still concerned over the ignition switch, mine looks like its between the battery and the R/R harness.... Your looks like it has it's own line from the battery.

Head scratchen a bit on the R/R to ignition switch line for your 6th gen. -- If you look at the 5th it has a simular to the switch. -- -I would have to study a 6th diagram. ------ Anyhoo, I know the direct to battery R/R hook up has been done on a 6th, I doubt anybody did any rewire on the switch.
