    Hi,

This morning I took the first trial ride on my VF750f which I have been restoring over this year and are about 0% complete! I was very excited to hear it running quite smoothly and the purpose of the ride was to ride up the road, change through all the gears and get home without breaking down.....unfortunalty this didnt happen
    1. I let the bike stall while turning around at the half way point, not enough charge in the battery so had to push her home:rolleyes:

    2. I could use only first and second, after that it would not change higher. I have had it running on the center stand and changed through all gears but found I would have to assist the gear lever down to its home position between upward gear changes. I assume there is a spring missing or broken. Does anybody know how deep in the motor this is buried and how hard it is to replace?

if it has the planetary gear set up like the 500 good luck. If I remember correctly the guide that worked the ratchet pawls was worn (with a grinder) so both pawls were engaged at the same time. Real PIA to put together correctly and at some point a PO couldn't get it to fit so they made it fit. Basically a metal wiper that retracts the pawls so that only 1 can be engaged at a time and holds 1 in so that as the shifter returns to it's neutral position it doesn't rotate the drum. Working on the shifter was easy, getting everything to line back up properly was a real PIA.

No, it doesn't. That is unique to the 500's.

My guess is either the detent spring is broken or something in the actuation linkage is bent/broken/not installed correctly. Those parts are behind the clutch basket under the right side case cover. I would pull that apart and check to see if everything is ok. If so then it could be you have a bad second gear (shift dogs on the gear) which is causing a bind. It's interesting that it only happens when riding, so I'm not sure about that part. Bad second gears are extremely common so it wouldn't surprise me if that is the culprit.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. It happened while I was riding, and while on the centre stand. The difference was that while on the centre stand I could put the lever back into its home position between gear changes. Doing that never occurred to me while I was riding.
I think and hope you are right JD. I think its the spring and have ordered a replacement, Im keen to get this bike fully mobile so I can test out my new JD shock!
