Last week I was in BAD stop and go traffic southbound on the I-294 Tollway when I started having brief intermittent cutouts while moving along in 1st or 2nd gear at very low speeds (less than 15 MPH, creeping in traffic). The tach needle would dive to zero, then jump back up like nothing happened. It was very hot that day, and indicated water temps on the bike rose to 220 degrees at times. The bike ran excellent for the 120 mile trip north, but I was not in hot traffic at that time. Once I cleared the traffic and could maintain 25-50 mph+, it never cut out again. Any ideas? I thought sidestand switch, but even when I move the stand down a bit with my foot it doesn't cause a cutout. I have a Mosfet r/r and charge at 14v or better, and checked this when I got home.

ground problems cause weird issues on the 5th gen. Not sure that it's a widespread issue but it's caught me and a few others. Did you notice anything else like weird behavior out of the FI light? You may want to take a moment to inspect the ground buss on the left side of the bike for evidence of burning.

a problem would look like the burned pin on the orange ground buss below

The location of the connector is on the left side and taped against the wiring harness. You do NOT need to unwrap the harness as shown in this photo to inspect.

No FI light, and I don't think the LCD display flashed either (almost like cycling the run/stop switch)

still sounds like possible ground buss. When it happened to me and other accounts I've "seen", it would act like the run stop switch was thrown or sidestand etc. But it's usually accompanied by the FI light glowing dimly.

I'll take a look at the ground buss when I have some spare time (maybe Friday). Thanks!

Does it put the 14V out at idle? The fan puts a heavy drain on the system, which can sap a battery, if your stuck in traffic for very long. If your riding the clutch, in a slow crawl, the RPMs are probably going to be even lower. If the blip coincided with the fans kicking in, when the draw is the heaviest, I would try increasing the idle a little.

It does put out 14+ volts all the time, and I have been on a 4th Gen when the r/r just died. All the gauges go nuts, then you are just dead in the water when th battery no longer has the juice to run the ignition and all the other stuff. The idle is about 1300 and solid. I'll check some connectors Friday

Are you sure your spark plugs are the right heat range? But it does sound electrical with the tach going crazy. Like has been said with a ground. I thougt I read something in the owners manual about shutting down automatically if it gets to hot? I could be wrong. It may just be the temp display starts flashing or something. Did yours flash?

These are the symptoms my 1st gen had when the pick up coils (pulse generators) started to die. Tacho is fed by the pulse also sent to the spark plug coils. Engine heat causes expansion that was probably braking a coil continuity. On the 5th gen wiring is not as trivial but this but failing pick up coils could explain the symptoms.
