Lance Armstrong facing lifetime ban, loss of titles - CNN.com
I have been a huge fan of cycling.Owned 2 Treks and currently own Felt road bike plus few hand built single speed.
Lance situation comes no surprise to me. Its kind of sad ending for an athlete venerated as superman.

The seven-time Tour de France victor announced Thursday he will no longer fight his investigation by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency – meaning he will be banned for life from ever competing again, reports CNN.

Late Thursday, the USADA confirmed it will also strip Armstrong of all results since Aug. 1, 1998, reports USA Today.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough.' For me, that time is now," Armstrong, 40, said in a statement.

We heard that statement over and over again and yet If he is innocent then he should of fought the charges since too much is at stake however his former teammates testifying he was doping along with them is hard to fight.
In all, USADA said up to 10 former Armstrong teammates were set to testify against him. Included in the case were emails sent by Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, describing an elaborate doping program on Armstrong's Postal Service teams, and Tyler Hamilton's interview with "60 Minutes" claiming had personal knowledge of Armstrong doping.

Had Armstrong chosen to pursue arbitration, USADA said, all the evidence would have been available for him to challenge.

"He chose not to do this knowing these sanctions would immediately be put into place," the statement said.
In the end Lance has become the biggest Freud in history of sports

You are kinda harsh for a man that has fought death, and come back to be the winningest rider (Tour de France) of all time. He had fought charges since for many years over and over. You stand on your high chair and judge him like you have the right to because some dude has a hard-on for getting him nailed.

Ok, if he passed all of his tests, and that does not mean that he was "clean" by USADA, then how are we sure of riders that failed the tests actually are guilty? Is a negative really a positive after 10 years, is a positive really a negative then? Who keeps the pee pee from being tapered with? How can we be sure of any testing for the tour, for the olympics, for anything? If you stripped him of all medals, how can you be sure the next guy down wasn't doping? And the guy after him, and the guy after him?

Say what you want of him, like has been parroted by many supporters, he has done more for humanity by raising almost 500 million for cancer. Can you match that? Should the world now all just take a big dump on Lance and everything he has done because of the hardon that Travis Tygatt has for Lance. Amazing that it has only taken like 15 years, and the words of several dopers that have lied about everything to the world. Take a look at yourself, and what you have done for the world for some many before you bad mouth someone without giving them a chance, and looking thru the lenses of their lives, and what they have been put thru after years.

If he ever has doped, I guess we many never know, but I will not take the words of this clown at USADA who has a personal vendetta against Lance. Your arrogance, and ignorance, in your post has my panties all in a wad now, so excuse me while I unbunch them and take a prozac!

    some famous dopers
    Ben Johnson
Johnson captured the imagination of Canadians on Sept. 27, 1988, when he won the 100-metre sprint title in a world-record time of 9.79 seconds at the Seoul Olympics. To make the victory even sweeter, Johnson captured the gold medal by handily defeating American rival Carl Lewis.
The euphoria of Johnson's win didn't last, however, when it was found the Canadian tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol.

    Marion Jones-Thompson
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 5 -- Onetime track superstar Marion Jones pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of lying to federal investigators and admitted in a packed U.S. District courtroom that she took steroids before the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, all but ensuring that she will be stripped of the five medals she won there.
    Jay Jonathan Gibbons

Tainted meat. When cycling champion Alberto Contador tested positive in 2010 for the banned drug clenbuterol, the cyclist blamed a steak dinner. He said the meat must have been cut from a cow that had been dosed with the substance. After two years of appeals, the doping charges were upheld, and he was stripped of his Tour de France title.

lot more but you get the idea...Fk all cheaters!

Lot of ordinary people have fought cancer as well!!! Him winning tours doped is plain cheating therefore his achievements insignificant.
If I knew I was clean I would of fought any charges no matter which court because that's a personal dignity matter.
He knew he had no chance since his former teammates came out plain accusing him of doping.
    I am not harsh enough!
I am far from ignorant.I have been member of biggest bike forum
    http://www.bikeforums.net/forum.php
and you should read the comments from cyclists!
1st off you don't know shit about me and secondly ball was on Lance's court to defend himself!Fact that he declined to defend his innocence is by default admission of guilt hence it does not MATTER what I say!
Lot of famous athletes cheated and Lance is no exception from that list.He just had a golden image that people like you still hold dear.

Jealous wears an ugly face Mr Rubo. Maybe one day you will get over your jealousy and really open your eyes.

Lots of people have fought cancer, but he has raised almost 500 million to help beat cancer to help others. Your jealousy is beaming thru. Keep on the hate...maybe your mama didn't love you enough, or maybe you were not breast feed, or something? Whatever the reason, take a second to think for yourself, and not be forcefed everything the 10 O'clock news feeds you?

If you don't want to believe in Lance fine.....go take a dump on a trek bicycle if it gets you off, but know that if you bad mouth one who has helped so many others, and given inspiration, just because he is tired of fighting after years, and never failing a test, well, you may rub them the wrong way.

Excuse me while I put on my spandex and jerk off to my Lance poster now.

    Signed,
    Cult of the Lance

Jealous? hardly.I have bought books on Lance and was a fan until things, revelations started to come out.
    1) lance is guilty of doping. period. if he was innocent, he would not have stopped the fight and gave in. theres simply way too much on the line for any sane person to just roll over and cop to something they didn't do.

    2) heresay, witness testimony and circumstantial evidence can on itself be used to convict someone of a crime/offense. it happens all the time. from murder to robbery, doping is no different in the eyes of the law. illegal is illegal.

    3) there is an overwhelming amount of witness testimony claiming he was in fact doping. not just a handful of people. we're talking about dozens of people, even personal friends (noncyclists) who overheard him admitting he had doped.

    4) Lance had strong ties to coaches apart of the doping trade (michele ferrari) and pretty much his whole team has admitted to doping.

    5) Lance did in fact test positive in 1999, it was just thrown out because he had a doctor's note.

    6) even if you dont test positive, that doesnt mean youre clean. all you need is a hookup/friend in the background to notify you beforehand of when the test will be, and you cycle off the dope beforehand so you dont test positive.

FYI Very little money goes into actual Cancer research from his foundation.Mostly is just government PR and awareness programs.

    from a fellow cyclist

But here's my problem. Armstrong has chosen to take the cowards way out. By not stepping up, and admitting that he doped, he has chosen not to fight, because then he doesn't have to face what I believe scares him the most: Anonymity.

Sure, the greater cycling community know's that it's just not possible for him to naturally have had 6.8 or 7 watts per kilo, when the limit of human performance probably rests around 6-6.2watts/Kilo. We know that It's just not possible for a guy who won tours where the rest of the top five have admitted doping to be clean. But the general public doesn't know that. The millions of people wearing livestrong bracelets don't know that. Everyone who has started cycling because of the "work" Armstrong does for cancer doesn't know that.

By making this choice, Armstrong has decided that If it went to arbitration, he would be found guilty. That's the worst possible thing for him, because everything he has done would have the black cloud of "Doper" Hanging over it. And so much of what he's done would be forgotten.

That's where the problem is. We know that this is as close to an admission of guilt as we're going to get. Sure, he's getting stripped of all his victories, of his seven Yellow jerseys, but nobody is going to remember that. Nobody outside of cycling is going to remember him as the doper he is, because he chose not to face the issue, and instead hide behind his standard lines of "Witch-hunt" and "Unfair".

You know what's unfair Lance? The face that you're never going to be remembered as the cheater you are.

What he has done for Cancer research is great no doubt. That he survived cancer, thanks to very talented medical professionals, is great. The fact that he was able to compete in the tour is outstanding regardless of the cancer and the doping.

Other "ordinary" people have raised money for Cancer research too. Countless people have stepped up to the plate in support of helping cancer patients survive with live organ donations as well.

Terry Fox began a run across Canada after loosing a leg to cancer. The cancer spread and he had to stop. He died. His legacy as ofApril 2010, has raised over $500 million in Canada alone for cancer research. Understand, there are only 34.4 million people in Canada.

Rick Hansen became a paralyzed from the waist down after being thrown from the back of a PU truck, resulting in him hitting a tree, when he was 15 years old circa 1972. He went on the graduate from the Physical Education Program at the University of British Columbia, while being paralyzed. He wheeled himself "around the world" including a portion of the Great Wall of China in his manual wheel chair and raised through his Rick Hansen Foundation, over $200 million for spinal cord research.

I believe people will not hold the American Cancer Society to blame for Armstrong's behavior, and will continue to support this worthwhile cause. Lance Armstrong made some great accomplishments for sure. All the while you saw him on the tube saying "look at me." He is a cheat.

I encourage you to continue to, or start supporting Cancer Research in you respective countries, as well as get yourslf signed up for the Unrelated Bone Marrow Doner Registry in your countries. It is not hard to find out how.

How many people here have been hunted down by an agency for over 10 years? I don't think anyone knows what that's like. I get frustrated when i get a reminder letter of owing taxes, so having RETIRED from the sport professionally I would be pretty tired if someone was coming and knocking on my door yabbering on about how they have new witness testimonials.

I read the Landis book, and it was similar to the Tyler story of how they were innocent, and how they loved cycling to their core. I want to believe everyone that says they're innocent, the Landis story in particular seems like just a bogus test result. Testosterone, depending on who you ask, is about as performance enhancing as someone yelling at you before you start the stage, or falling half way through and getting back on your bike with a surge of adrenalin.

There's been some talk of statute of limitations, i honestly don't know much about it, but.....
I mean does anyone actually care? The core reason for sports is fair competition, but once it's televised and there's more money in commercials then going to most of the competitors it's entertainment. Myself, I was more entertained watching Lance dance on the pedals, or Landis riding everyone off his wheel then watching Wiggins hold his team mate back, and time trial his way to a Tour victory. I'm not a supporter of any drugs, but if all the good aggressive racing was because of drugs, they need to find a way to make cycling more interesting besides picking more cobblestone roads, not chasing past tour winners 10 years later.

The fact that Lance Armstrong has given up fighting the charges of doping doesn't mean he is guilty of the charges, just that he has come to the point in his life that losing the championships, & not being able to compete ever again, REALLY isn't that important to him!
Sometymes the fight isn't worth the effort, Is he going to lose his freedom or life, for deciding to give up the fight against the doping charges? Nope!
So why go broke, & stress over it?

Anyone ever heard of HUAC? Or Joseph McCarthy?

This guy Tygart sounds like McCarthy all over again, no hard proof, no evidence, just allegations from people that are also threatened with "investigation" by the same entity. That's how McCarthy found all those "communists" in the government, movie industry, and under the bed. I think I'll believe the factual evidence, not the "evidence" given by other people who stand to lose their livelihood if they don't cooperate, or are known to have cheated and lied already. Let me see, they lied before, but now they're telling the truth. Riiiiight.

Go Lance and piss on Tygart. Now that would be a positive urine test. :chaingun:

And oh yeah, the French tried for years to find him guilty of cheating but had to rely on actual testing. Now we have an American(?) who finds him guilty with no evidence. Nice of him to do the French's job for them.

I'm not going to stand here and say he is or isn't a cheat, i'm also not going to get my knickers in a bunch because it really doesn't affect me - I still watch the tour every year, a question still lingers in my mind how anyone can do this without assistance... If he is found guilty by way of empirical evidence, I'll say "silly boy mate" because I'm not willing to get off my arse and prove it can be done without assistance...

As for the things he has achieved - he is a household name, his face alone has probably drawn more people to the cause than any of the "unknowners" mentioned thus far in this thread - regardless of his actual contributions, he HAS raised awareness and that's important to me as someone touched by cancer...

I used to race a few amateur bicycle races and I was always amazed that anyone could do something like "Le Tour" and survive. I'd be dead in a ditch after the first 5 minutes.

Fighting the man takes a ton of money. I would bail out on it too. You're talking FOURTEEN YEARS LATER you have some new evidence... Show it then... Just some other guy saying I doped doesn't prove that I doped... I am curious to hear what Hincapie has to say though, not that it would change my mind about Lance.

I really don't care what they found or what "evidence" they have... He won what he won and has done good things because of that. The USADA needs to come up with some better standards so they don't completely destroy a sport. If they had evidence they should have shit canned him as soon as they had it (within some sort of statute of limitations) not wait fourteen years later to FINALLY go to arbitration AFTER the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT dropped their case against him.

I would also suspect that every single rider in Le Tour is doping some how... There is now way in hell you can compete at that level for that duration and not completely die. Any cyclist I think would agree... Doesn't make it right, but it is what it is..

If you get a chance check out the USADA list of banned substances... I'm sure most people on this Forum are doping right now by those standards! I know I am...

    Any chance ??

Any chance all the steroids, growth hormones, testosterone, and other stuff he was eating for so many years caused his cancer ?? In a world that competitive, most riders must be using, so what's the point of picking out one rider ??

Any chance this.... IMG_1666.jpg ...could get me banned here ??

So, after Armstrong's DQs from the Tours he won, the second place riders are named the winners. That includes Alex Zulle, Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso, and Andreas Kloden. Oh, and Rumsas is moved up to second one year. Hahahahaha! Anyone else see the irony?

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I will throw my opinion on a couple of simple facts.

Not only are we 14 years down the line, but if he was not caught doping and there is no blood sample analysis as proof (or official documents showing him being dosed for whatever he is accused of), it is hearsay. That is anadmissable in a real court, so it seems silly that they could think to go back and nail him on hearsay.

Not fighting charges is ABSOLUTELY not the same as admitting guilt. If you think it is, then you have an axe to grind and can't be taken seriously.

Most ridiculous in all this is that if EVERYONE is doping in professional cycling, then you are a clown to be a fan or even care about this whole type of discussion. If EVERYONE is doping, then the whole "sport" is a joke and deserves no more respect than pro wrestling.

Yes truth is during those years EPO was the new wonder drug and technology of detecting was not sufficient. Most top Cyclists were taking some kind of performance drugs and Lance knew he had to take in order to compete with peers who were doping.
Fine! I understand. He won a Tour doped. But tried again doped won and tried again and again and never hesitated that perhaps keep winning races doped is unethical.
Instead of denying like he was some kind of superman he could of said "Yes I doped because everyone was doping as well"
Its like a rapist keep raping until caught.
