Hi all ive got an 86 VFR 750F and i was riding along coming down a hill going down through gears when chain came off engine sprocket, i pulled over, shut her down and theres oil pissing out from above the gear shift somewhere, engine still running sweet, but sump dry, i know stuff all bout bike mechanics, anyone have an idea what may be in the firing line or what may have been damaged ? and or if it is gonna be expensive ? cheers, regards bill

Jus went an had a look, chain is still on front spkt but there is some rubber jamed in between the chain and spkt , i thought fluid leaking looked like oil at first, but now looks thiner, checked clutch reservoir, out of fluid ! so looks like some sort of clutch problems, just b4 i stoped , i felt chain skip then lock up, engine was idling beautiful before i shut down, anyone with any ideas please , cheers bill

I think you can count on it being pretty expensive if you have to have a shop work on it. With oil leaking out you've probably knocked a hole in the case. It might be fixable if the hole is not too bad and it's in a place that can be welded up. It could be just cracked and can be welded up, but until you have it checked out no way to know for sure. It could be relatively minor, or catastrophic, just have to pull the countershaft sprocket cover and take a look.

Not good news any way you look at it. Good luck.

Where abouts in Oz are you buddy...???

If it's a cracked case, happy to lob some epoxy metal mend your way or if you're local, lend a hand - rubber jammed between the sprocket is likely the factory rubber dampener (OEM honda countershaft sprockets usually carry this)...

Any chance of a few pics...???

Sounds like the rubber chain guard on the swing arm came off and got jammed in between the chain and sprocket. Tends to break the bolts to the sprocket cover/clutch slave cylinder in the case and just generally destroy things. Need to disassemble and inspect the damage.

If you have the proper tension on your chain should you even bother with this guard, Toe?

Keep the rubber chain guard. Even when properly adjusted, the chain "can" slap the swing arm.
