OK, had my bike conk out again on the highway and right as I come to a stop miraculously come back to life and I drove off. Pump or relay problems again it looks like. I am beginning to think it is the fuel pump relay again so I pulled the ones I have and they all tested the same with the ohmeter at the two pins- around 4 Megaohms and some change and then zero in the other direction. When I did the diode check across the pins about 2volts in one direction and OL in the other. Do these relays sound OK? I thought the resistance on the control should be around 50 ohms instead of 4 megaohms, Does this sound right?
Well, I think I put the relay from the bike that does not have any fuel issues on the suspect bike and it ran fine. (But it got an oil change this last weekend along with the other VFR and that helped with the smoothness feeling so it is kinda hard to tell) The roughness that was there before was totally gone but as stated before the oil change has a little to do with it I'm sure. All four of the relays measured the same as stated above so I don't know what to think at this point. I guess I'll just have to buy a new one and measure that as a calibration relay. Any suggestions no matter how wacky could not hurt.
The first problem i ever had with my first '86 700--back in 1991-- was a failed pump relay. I substited the jumper wire at the relay plug and never looked back. I've done the same on many others like my Hawks. No relay, no problem. Quicker starting after a period of non-riding without running the battery down while filling the carbs is a nice bonus.
Well Squirrel, if you haven't burned any bikes up with that mod I'll take that as a vote for chuck it and forget it.
