ok, so after checking with DMV to make sure that the title was free and clear of any incumbrances, (after a 4 hour hold, I realized I should have just ran the vin on the MDT in my cruiser) I've decided to delve into the bike and begin the transformation. Step one is to make sure it turns over / runs. The only problem is that the P/O (or someone) smashed out the ignition, all that is left is a bunch of wires that would have connected to the ignition.

    Here's a picture:

now, with a test light I've identified the all red wire as the incoming power wire.

I just need to know what all the others do, I don't want to just start connecting wires. does anyone have a link to a wiring diagram for a 1985 VF700F?

Thanks in advance......and oh, BTW, I take forever with projects such as this, it will be special, but just don't hold your breath!

The factory wiring diagram is so piss poor I needed my reading glass's and a magifying glass to make anything of the call oots at the ignition and they make almost no sense. I will do my best to trace and call them oot. The solid red is called oot as battery and goes to the main fuse in the starter relay. The red black is marked IG (Ignition I am thinking) straight to the power buss on the fuse panel and provides the power to all the fuses that are ignition powered. The next is marked as fan and runs to the fuse box for the fan power and is marked as blue orange and runs to the fuse panel and oot to the fans......the thermo switch when closed provides the ground to turn them on. The next is marked PA...... I got nothing for a guess....it is yellow black and runs to the fuse box and then to the license plate light and the stop and tail light unit. The next is marked TL2 and is the brown wire and is wired driectly into the last circuit.....after the fuse box.....not a clue why.....The last is TL1 and is marked as a brown white wire, looks to be the common lighting circuit. If this sounds like bullshit, you should look at it. Terrible at best. You need a picture of the plug pin oot....... Anyone?

On a positive note, the diagram does show the same colors on the ignition switch wiring as the harness has. If you just want to run it my money is red to red white. Should make it happen.

    well isn't this crazy?

I found this yesterday at Elite KTM in Loveland Colorado. I'm guessing you could look them up on the google machine and purchase over the phone. Appeared to be brand new and unopened. For some reason I had a feeling that someone would be looking for one so I snapped a camera phone pic:

Tink's right: you'll waste time, screw things up without a service manual.

Thanks guys, gonna try and run the red/red white. And if she runs I may just call that dealer and order the manual......weird that you saw that, huh? I'm going to have a bunch of parts to put up for sale/free, once I get going on this. So I'll post them as they're peeled off. I need a left side mid panel (the one that covers the battery, if anyone has one laying around......and depending....I may need a tank as well.....going to try and Kreem it, but it looks pretty rough on the inside....

No solid black wire on the harness side? Friend of mine and me had a saying when we worked at a Honda dealership, "Red + Black = Go." Many bikes came in without keys.

It's been a while, so maybe my memory is fuzzy.

I have an upper triple clamp and lock barrel off a 1992. No key. Appears to be the same as earlier model but do not know for certain. I have a local locksmith who can make keys with the ID number off the barrel. Assuming there's a guy out there who can do the same and in your line of work you probably know him already.

Free to you plus shipping costs.

holy crap......anyone know if that top clamp would work in place of the '85? I dont plan on running the stock bars, and I was going to have a custom top clamp machined.....but if that one has the same dimensions as the stocker, minus the fuse area, that would be ideal!

oh, and BTW, it was the red/red-black to get it going. It basically fired right up with a little starter fluid and my surrogate "testing tank". No unusual engine noises, purred like a kitten. I forgot how awesome these bikes sound.....gonna sound even better with the 4-to-4 exhaust in the works.......stay tuned!

obviously everything else is getting torn off this bike, the carbs were leaking out of the float bowls, the hyd clutch is shot, tires are shot, chain is shot, all the suspension needs to be re-worked, the only "good" piece of bodywork is the chin fairing in front of the lower radiator, etc. etc.

but I'm so excited that things are finally falling into place.......

So Tink, if that top clamp will fit, I'll take it. Just PM me what shipping to 06419 would be if it does. Thanks!

    Not sure.

I might have the lower too. Will have to check. Then measure sizes and spacing or check the manual.
