    Hi all,

I'm deciding on which of two Fourth Gens to purchase, both are 8/10 condition. One is a 1997 with 25k miles at an asking price of $3300. The other is a 1996 with 11k miles at an asking price of $3900. Is $3000 the norm in price?

    Thanks,

    David Matthew

Do you have to have a 4th gen? With 3 k I can get me a nice fifth gen. couple more ponys easy to find parts. If you have to have the fourth gen. I would prefer 97 with 25k miles it is newer year and cheaper and cost less. Mileage for VFR is not an issue.

i have seen a few in norcal with 20-30000 miles in clean shape for $2500-3000. Having said that, agree with Scubalong, unless you are specifically after a gen 4 go newer.

I agree with the gang here go with 5th gen FI
Carb tech is lets face it archaic technology. With FI hardly needs maintenance.Quick start, smooth operation.
Having said this 4th gens are little lighter then 5th.Some argue sportier.I personally like the looks of 4th gens but you should consider all options not just the looks besides looks are personal taste.
Price is high for 4th gen.You can get spanking condition 5th gen with same money.

I personally would take a well tuned carb any day over an F.I. bike. having said that they are higher maintanence and you have to know how to work on them. ease of ownership goes to fuel injection. mainly, getting parts for older gen bikes is the real PITA and concern.

Thanks you for all the responses. I have no preference on what Generation to buy, 3k-3.5k is my budget and all I seem to find for sale in my area in that price range is Fourth Generations. Great condition Fourth Gens I may add. I've scoured all of SoCal Craigslist and I only found a couple Fifth Gens for sale around my budget but the condition of them is iffy. Like I said, I have no preference on Generation but my previous bike was a 1996 CBR 600F3 and I was quite fond of the smells and sounds it's carbureted mill made. What would ya'll pay for a great condition Fourth Gen, 2k-3k, or is 3k asking too much? Again, thanks for all the opinions and input.

I paid $2400 for my 4th gen 1996 in January. Then, after being towed in twice, had it completely rewired because the rectifier problems over the years had fried the wiring and a new harness was 2 months out, delivery-wise. ($550) Now I have a 33,000 monster that's reliable. (I still carry a new rectifier under the seat.) It starts and runs perfectly and does anything I want; super ride.

if it makes you happy, its in great working order, and good cosmetic condition - I would throw $3000 down on it. Wave $3000 cash in his face and you will probably get it for 300 less..lol thats just what I would do. You should link us the craigslist ad (if there is one)!!!

There is a 4th gen in my neighborhood for $3200 with 75k miles on it. This might sound unreasonable until you hear the next part...

It is owned by a motorcycle mechanic who has had it since 21k miles and this is his baby. He was also my motorcycle tech professor and he would bring it in and use it as a demo bike to show how certain systems worked. There is not a single speck of dirt on it and when you touch the chain, your fingers come back with a slight gold sheen since he's so CLEAN about it. It also has racetech fork springs, Ohlins rear shock, and a 2 brothers carbon fiber exhaust can with K&N filter and jet kit. I would pick it up if I didn't need more room...

Again, it is impossibly clean and here's the link: '97 Honda VFR 750 -no differed maintenance-

I went with the 1997 in Lancaster, I pick it up on Monday. There is not a scratch or dent on it anywhere. We agreed on $3000. The PO has it right now at the shop getting all the fluids flushed, oil and oil filter changed. It has a new chain, new sprockets, brake pads, Dunlop Q2 tires front and rear along with Galfer SS braided front brake lines. I feel I got a good deal considering the freshening up and new parts that are coming with the bike. The tires alone would of cost me $300 installed and several more hundred getting the bike prepped for daily use and a long trip I have coming up, Murrieta, CA to Mendocino County, CA. I plan on taking the 1/101 route. My goal in buying a bike was to get a bike that is ready for me to hop on and just go. Your instructors bike is super clean and has tasteful mods. I would of totally gave it serious consideration if I didn't go with the one I had.
