Any of you happened to change/upgrade the std shock of the 86 VFR?

I dont mind whether the lenght is longer, that would sound even better. Any idea about scraps from other bikes (CBR, GSXR or whatever) is welcome.

That's a fine advice although it's quite unusual so little people managed to try some cheap market alternative.
I have other bikes which Ive provided with second hand OEM shock equipment with great advantage and little grain.
    Thanks anyway.

Unless you purchase a direct fit mono shock, you will have to modify any other shock that would be worth using. So unless you have fabrication skills or friends with such? Jamie is the goto Guy!

Putting a shock from a different model bike on another bike is typically not a one for one swap, depending on which bike the shock came from, the shock could be way over sprung/damped, or at the opposite end, way under sprung/damped. If you check out Jamie's website you'll see that some of the shocks he sells are modified CBR929, CBR600, and other "off bike" shocks, they are just re-valved and re-sprung for the VFR, your weight and the type of riding you'll be doing. I sent Jamie a shock off of an '07 ABS model so I could have it rebuilt to my "specifications" and to gain the remote pre-load adjuster that is not on the non-ABS model bike that I have. It was a fraction of the cost of a new "off the shelf" after market shock and it is worlds better than the stock one I had, plus now I can adjust pre-load without having to bust my knuckles using the pre-load spanner.

Anyway you slice it, it would be a good idea to seek out a suspension specialist in regards to the shock you chose to swap out with. I'm sure if you do a search here or on VFRD, or even Google, you'll see a common theme in regards to what shocks fit and what they had to do to them to make them work on their VFR.

    Cheers

You generally dont have to modify any oem shock coming from a stock bike with similar destination. It is a common, weel-known trick, in order to save time and money. A simple well-minded (!) mech will be able to fit on your bike and apply those minimum variations needed to slip in correctly and to stand the new use (weight of bike and passenger). Any shock absorber is born to satisfy very different needs and uses. Hence many worries dont have reason to exist.
In any case, as we are talking about an "ancient" bike, it is quite hard to find any advice on which type will fit in any social forum or company site.

    Again thanks for your info.

Your 86 is a 2nd gen by the way, Works Performance Shocks and Hagon still make shocks for these bikes. If you can find a used Ohlins or a Fox Twin Clicker and do a rebuild that would be fine. Just remember that the 86 shock is shorther than an 87 so you really can't use one for the other.

I discover now that VFR 86 is a second gen. and has a shorter shock than 87 model that should be the same. Sure we're talking about the same thing?

IF you don't like the answers to your question, then go someplace else, as it sure seems that we must not know what we are talking about! Since you are being argumentative towards every reply!

No my friend, you dont have to blame a polite answer, as you appear not to focalize exactly what you're talking about. I dont know you nor I dream to come again in touch with you. And your last reply largely show my assumption.
So please dont disturb my interchange with some good-willing members. Spend your time in a more constructive way!
