Hi y'all, just wondering if anyone can help me source some 025th over rings + some main & bigend bearings, l'v finally decided to rebuild my engine of my 1999 vfer after 260,000 ks of happy motoring the trouble is that my favorite parts supplier in the good ol U.S of A has everything l need for the bike in stock and ready to go EXCEPT piston rings & bearings which they don't handle, why l don't know...anyhoo l was wondering if anyone knows of some reliable parts suppliers out there

no answer to your question - just piping in to say that I'd sure be interested to know how much wear you measure. What is bringing on the rebuild, is it starting to burn oil or low compression? Are you going to rebuild with OEM or go with lightweight pistons and rods?

Engine rebuilds on the VFR don't happen often. And in the US, there are enough low mile engines around that it's usually cheaper just to swap.

Hi tinkerinwstuff, the motor has started getting a vibration around the output shaft bearing which l suspect is on the way out , also it has a fair bit of noise when in 6th (gear whine) apart from valve shims, stators & regulators the motor is untouched, l'v always used Honda GN4 mineral oil in it at 5000k intervals and the engine uses very little if any oil in that time, although its getting a bit smoky when cold

The motor that l'm working on is one that l imported from the US only it was sent over in parts minus the rings & bearings, l'v measured up the engine and believe the seller when he said it only done 10,000ml, it speced up beautifully, my main parts supplier in the US has been Motosports and l can get everything for the bike l want from them EXCEPT rings/bearings...go figure, although l have other bikes (no car) l want to take the bike off the road for the least amount of time possible, so when it comes time it should only take me a day to do the change over, l cant wait to pull my engine out to see what wear l have inside, l will post up the results + pics (if l can figure out how) on the forum if anyones interested

You might try CyclePartsWarehouse.com They seem to have everything I've looked for and at a good price. Good luck. And definitely report back what you find when you tear your engine down.

Good luck in your search. Its pretty awesome to hear about a bike still going with 160,000+ miles on it.

Thanks Mrsleep l'll try them now, yep its been a good bike over the years Pliskin and its seen its fair share of the redline so its definitely been used and injoyed, l think regular oil changes is the key, some of the oil galleries especially in the top end are really small and l don't think it would take much to clog them resulting in expensive repairs

I'd be interested in knowing how it all goes (I'm in Melbourne, if you're interested in someone dropping by to have a look and lending a hand). Have you thought of boring it out a bit more and putting a big bore kit in it?

I too have nothing helpful to say, but my '99 Fi-X also has a gear whine in sixth and I'd be very interested to know what you find.
