Thanks for the archive of information and experience you all have collected here. I've been reading through some threads and bookmarked a few links for my new ride after I get her home tonight.

In short, Only 6900 miles on the odometer... yes you read that right. This is the same year and color of the bike that I cut my riding teeth on and learned all my skills with as an errant young adult. Looking forward to getting it home, cleaned up, ready to ride and enjoying a few miles on it. I don't know that it will be in the garage for long, just depends on how I feel after riding it for a few weeks. I still have a lot of DS dirt in my blood and need to satisfy that itch. For the price paid on the VFR, I can easily repair and flip if necessary, especially with that low of mileage.

This will be the first moto I have bought that is not 100% ready to ride. Since the shop had it in on consignment, they would not allow me to take the fairings off for an inspection. They did agree to crank it and let me hear it run, which exposed the drip of fuel going down the left engine case. I haggled the shop owner $700 off the asking price due to the fact that I could not take it apart and check. I did hear it run for a few minutes before shutting it down and agreeing on a sale price. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be something as simple as a tank flush, new fuel lines/gaskets and carb cleaning.

First order of business after the fuel repair will be new springs in the forks and a fork oil change. After that, I'll likely replace the R/R and replace the wiring harness that connects to the R/R. Flush and fill the radiator, flush/fill/bleed the brakes, clean/lube the chain, wash, clay bar and wax the bodywork until she gleams.

Said it before, I usually don't like white, but a VFR looks good in white.

VERY nice find! I'll guess a dry rotted fuel line since the petcock and fuel pump lines all live on the left side. Hope its an easy fix for you! Enjoy!

Thanks all. removing the left side plastics confirms a dry rotted line to the fuel filter and subsequent running stain down the aluminum to the kick stand. Did not get the tank all the way off yet due to just plain tiredness and overwhelming hunger from skipping dinner. Need deeper investigation to see where it's coming from underneath. That will have to wait until I finish my intervals tomorrow evening. Listed price was $4200. I countered initially with $3100 and finally agreed on $3500 simply due to the low mileage.

Well worth every cent in my opinion.

If one line is dry, they're all probably dry. The first thing I always do after picking up an older bike is change out all the fuel lines. Cheap and easy way to make sure NEVER to see your bike melt down on the side of the road (again) due to a leaking fuel line. Most fun is getting to the lines between the 2 banks of carbs....

OT: do you bike competitively or just fun?

hehe, thanks for the vote of encouragement. I race competitively in criteriums, road racing, MTB and just purchased a cyclocross to satisfy my teammates prodding.

Sounds like you have a two wheel addiction. I used to say if it has two wheels I'll ride it. Atleast until some things happened in Vegas, involving the hotel cleaning lady and a set of training wheels....

I raced XC MTB for years in the late 90-2000's. Then dabbled in down hill. Finally broke down and bought a new road bike and thinking about joining up with the local shop team.

Anyway, keep us posted on your VFR progress!

Ha! yeah. What happens in Vegas... eventually gets posted to the interwebs. :D I race a single speed 29er in MTB and only for local 3-6 hour races. My specialty is crit racing. 25-27mph sustained for 45 minutes to an hour just to try and win enough money to cover my entry fees. LOL

Tank comes off the V tonight. AFTER dinner this time...

Have fun with her, in my somewhat biased opinion....hard to beat a 90-93 VFR! Just got my '91 2 days ago, and despite a botched left hip replacement last Nov I've managed to squeeze on her and go riding. Now why did I ever trade in my '92???! DFO

Thanks all. Slow going and she's sans bodywork right now as I try and localize a smoking problem after cranking and running a few minutes. Fuel lines and filter have been replaced with new oem parts. Fuel in tank drained and replaced with zero ethanol. Oil and filter is on tap for this evening after work. Have the K&N oil filter ready... gotta buy some oil somewhere, but no motorcycle shops in the area.

FYI, usually some auto parts stores carry the basics for motorcycles, oil, coolant, filters, etc... You could start there.

Beautiful bike, love the paint scheme (not as fast as yellow, but nice).
    Congrats!

She lives! Drained all old fuel from tank and replaced with new non-ethanol 89 along with some star-tron to clean up any residual left in the system. Cranked and smoked like a 1890's coal train for about a half hour. After that she settled down so I took her up and down the road for a few runs through the gears. The suspension needs firming up badly and the throttle is not as crisp as I'd like, but at least she's mobile again. Next is suspension work. Front is easy enough with an oil replacement and spring upgrade. The rear will need some research on the best value options.

Nice job! I ended up biting the bullet and ordering a Penske rear shock for my running 93. Went with their basic shock. With the new shock and repacking the dogbone bearings, pretty nice, like butta'. About $600 though. My Penske with remote on my FZR was 1100!

What spring upgrade were you thinking? I have a spare set of racetech .90 kg S3534 springs I was going to use on my 93 rehab bike but decided to go CBR 954 front end instead. I have a set in my running 93 and I'm at 200lbs right now. I'll never use the spares so PM me if the spring rate is useable for you and if you're interested.

Finally through the first tank of fuel and ended with about 150 miles on the gauge. IIRC, this is about normal for the Viffer, although my last one had a pipe and mild jetting. Patiently awaiting new fork springs to get the front under control (thanks Reek!). Once that's done, I'll focus on the rear shock.
