it might be simple to some of you, but not for a mechanically uninclined person like myself, i need to ask

i got some rotella t6 to add to the vfr, but its viscosity is 5w-40
does it make a difference if i used it in my vfr800 '06?
whats the main difference between 10w-40 (besides weight)?
if i cant use it, why not?

Typically the hotter the climate the higher the viscosity i.e. In Arizona, you would probably use something more like 20w-50. Where as cooler climates, Canada for example, you would use a lower viscosity i.e. 5w-40. But the actual current climate should dictate would you might want to be running now. Thinner oils for colder climates, thicker for warmer. That's the simplest explanation I have.

According to the Honda Service manual for 2002-2009 models the recommended oil viscosity is 10w-40. That being said, I personally have used a different viscosity oil than what was recommended in some of my other vehicles without issue, but I always tried to use what's recommended if at all possible. Sometimes I would use 20w-50 in the summer an 10w-40 in the winter (So Cal doesn't get really cold). I would imagine that as long as you do not under fill or over fill your motor you shouldn't have an issue. I think what is more important to note is the service classification, i.e. API service class and JASO (see image below)
